Changing out turbine housings

I have a 62-1 with a 1.15 divided turbine housing and I was thinking of going to a .96 undivided ( my exhaust manifold is undivided) for a little quicker spool. I was curious if this was unbolt/bolt on change or does it need to be professionally done alone with a rebalance. If I can do it, could one please run down the proceedure.

hey ,as long as you have a bit of an idea and common sense you should be able to manage the change over ,witness mark the turbine housing in relation to the bearing housing and if your changing housing put a corresponding mark on your new housing otherwise do a trial fit before you tighten bolts at the end
secure the turbine housing in a vice ,either hold it across the flange or use soft jaws and hold it the other way to protect the gasket surface ,try to loosen bolts ,helps if you have a good quality spanner ,some you may only be able to use an open end on ,so any sign of rounding the heads off get the oxy out ,if u havent access to a big heating tip use a cutting tip but set on a "cool" flame ,heat around any bolts that are tight making sure you keep the flame on the move all the time ,make sure you dont heat the actual bolt but around it ,hopefully bolts wont give you too much grief depends on how old the turbo is etc ,if you break any off welcome to the world of heli coiling lol
if you have successfully managed too loosen all bolts then heat the housing evenly around the bolt area but if you stick to the top half of the turbine housing closest to the bearing housing the heat will transfer thru the housing ok ,remember dont use a hot tip and keep the flame on the move ,keep checking as you heat for any signs of the bearing housing starting to move ,once it is loose you may have to turn the cartridge a little so you can get any bolts you couldnt take right out previously ,lift the cartridge straight up and carefully

for installation make sure the bearing housing /heat shield area is clean and free of carbon etc and also on the turbine housing if its a secondhand housing ,this is critical so make sure you clean it thoroughly ,if cleaned properly you should be able to slip the cartridge into the turbine housing and turn it when its fully seated .
remove cartridge and apply copper coat grease around the bearing housing area where it seats into the turbine housing ,dont over do it just a light smear is all you need ,if the bolts and clamps are in ok condition use again but replace if old and crappy ,put a light smear on the bolt threads as well ,also i should of mentioned when you seat the cartridge back into the turbine housing check to make sure the bearing housing is sitting a little proud of the turbine housing so the clamps do their job ,nip up all bolts evenly and then tighten ,dont get to beat up over torque but if you replace the bolts make sure they are with high tensile ones ,you can only use a spanner so its not like your going to break them ,use common sense though ,lock tabs dont need to be bent up to the heads of the bolt but if you feel the need do so

good luck !!!!

oh the most important part lol
spin the bloody thing and make sure it doesnt rub ,put weight using ur fingers on the turbine wheel and try to make it rub as u turn it ,if u dont hear the turbine wheel scraping on the housing then ur sweet
