Breaking tires loose at high speed

I am about to re-tune my FD and am thinking about my performance goals. My set-up has the potential to produce numbers similar to the attached Mustang dyno graph. My car has not been lightened, it has a Kaaz LSD, it's lowered on JIC coilovers, and tires are Yoko AVS on 18 x 9.5 rims.

My performance goal would be limiting the amount of torque to a safe level under which one wouldn't expect the tires to break loose over 70 mph. I've been running at 440 whp - 340 ft/lbs and often break the tires loose in 2nd gear, and I'm comfortable handling the car at that speed, but don't want to be doing that over 70 mph. My question is, if I hit the 400 ft/lb mark, will I be smokin' tires well into 3rd or even 4th gear?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

If you look at 2nd gear ratio and compare it to 3rd gear ratio you will see how much torque you will need to do in 3rd what you do now in 2nd.

The tires will break away at the same wheel torque in any gear. (actually wind resistance will cause the tires to spin at slightly less torque)

What do you recommend for street / highway fun? I'm aware of the Mick Tompson products, but have been given the impression that the sidewalls give too much for all around hard highway driving.

Thanks! I'll do the math. Also, If anyone has any futher thoughts or experiences or more factors to consider than wind resistance, I'd appreciate it.

What boost controller do you have? Several such as the AVCR can be set at different boost levels at set RPMs, or in certain gears at certain RPMs. I doubt you would be even close to breaking traction in 3rd with a decent 275-35-18 tire. I'd suggest the Kumho MX, or the Falken RT615. The pirellis fall far short of either of these tires in terms of both straightline, and lateral grip. get the MXs if you'll be driving in the rain, either if mainly in the dry. I have ~450ftlbs in my heavier Supra, and it is not even cose to loosing traction in 3rd. My buddy is making ~550ftlbs(Supra), and will only break traction in 3rd with aggressive shifts. I suspect if you really tried an agressive shift combined with a crappy tire could spin in 3d, but a decent tire, or a less aggressive shift will eliminate the problem. Carl

Summitomo has an inexpensive tire that has broken a couple of diffs when heated at the track. They also becomes very sticky in hot lapping. Very impressive for a street tire. I was able to get consistant high 1.7 60's on a 18 X 40X 8 tire.
Like road race tires you are throwing stuck rubble out of them when you leave the track or run off line.
Just another to add to the list from a user. (I ve owned/used most but the P. Zero).

I actually installed an AVCR and have suspected it was the cause of some major fluctuations in boost levels, so I was considering eliminating it. Anyone here having success or problems with the AVCR or comparable variable boost contol?

You'll find that people either love it, or hate it. It is probably the most versatile controller out there, but people get confused by all its features. If you follow the directions(which are poor), you can set it up in a simple mode that is very easy to use. Then when you get more comfortable with it, you can take advantage of the more advanced features. If you need help setting it up, you can call me on the weekend (free minutes ), and I can walk you through it. It is perfect, as I mentioned for running very high HP cars safely. For now, if you post exactly how you have it set-up, and where you are referncing boost, we can critique the set-up. Carl

The A'PEXi AVC-R is the best EBC I've come across for the money.
The unit does NOT like any kind of creep or spiking, and if it doesn't set correctly, this is 99% of the problem.

I bought this car already built, but have done things like adding the AVCR and taking it from a T-62 to a T-61. I've owned it for over a year, and right now at this very moment I'm admitting to myself (and everyone else) for the first time that I'm in a bit over my head! LOL I honestly can't believe I haven't blown the damn thing up yet! I've got a lot of homework to do between now and the 1st of Oct, which is my re-tuning date.
