Anyone still running with stock seals

I plan to build my R1 this winter. Im going to keep the stock internals and just upgrade everything else. Turbo will be a T04, Custom Exhaust manifold, Tial wastegate, Spearco Intercooler, Ecu will be either haltech or Gems, complete fuel system(fuel cell, big pump,-10 lines, reg, etc).
Just looking to make 500hp @ ~20lbs boost.

Does anyone have a similar setup?

stock seals are good for 1200+ HP

detonation is the killer of apex seals, provided you keep the a/f ratio's in check and keep the intake temps low, you'll be fine, a lot of the guys here making big numbers are using the stock 3piece 2 mm seals

That's exactly what i wanted to hear.. So many people are insisting that i use 3mm seals. But what they don't realize is the reason most of them blow their engines is not because the stock seals can't handle the power but because they lean them out or run to much timing.

Has anyone used the gems Ecu.. They are real high quality computers im surprised no one has used them before. The E6K does not come with a knock sensor and to add it will cost me an extra 500 bucks. So the price for the gems is not to bad after all...

what do you need a knock sensor for? only the shitty factory ecu needs a knock sensor, and thats only cause it cant do the job right

That was what I was thinking until I talked to Chris. He said that Ari uses a J&S on there FD just in case. I guess he is right. If you tune your car to the limit and get a bad tank of gas or something else goes wrong, I bet you wish you invested that $500 over a blown motor. Just my .02

Knock Sensor's are VERY IMPORTANT... There's no way anyone would tune without one... You can't get aggessive... Knock sensors pickup detonation way before any of us can hear it. And by the time you hear it it's already too late.

The J&S is a great sensor but it costs 500 bucks.. So i will be looking into the gems Ecu for sure.

AND the stock Ecu is NOT ****.. IT has much better technology then many of the aftermarket ecu's. The disadvantage is it's not adjustable...

by the time the knock sensor detects knock its too farkin late anyway unless you have big booty seals, extra dowels and harder rotor faces.

detonation kills engines, one single ping is enough to do the damage.

you cant tune a rotary with a knock sensor, end of story, the best tuners use their ear drums as a guide and then comfirm it with a dyno run.

for a sensor to detect knock its too late, game over, see what i am getting at

When you say stock internals do you mean stock seals along with a non street ported motor?

Yeah what i meant was stock seals..

Well I don't know who the best rotary tuner is YET, but i do know Kenny Duttweiler and Job Spetter(turbo people) are the best tuners of Buicks and Mustangs and they both use knock sensors.

With knock sensors if you detonate, your Ecu will retard the timing and save you your motor. Why would anyone not want to use one?

a knock sensors senses knock right, unlike a piston motor with a rotary you cant just get knock then retard the timing a tad. if you get knock, you rebuild your motor and start again. for a sensor to detect knock, knock has to have occured, one single knock (the one the sensor detects) is enough to blow a seal.
you cant get knock in a rotary, end of story, its not a piston motor and its not that simple, thats why you have to be very very careful with them.
Buicks and mustangs are both piston engines, can you see my point yet?????????????

Best rotary tuner...

Best rotary tuner: Probably Rick Engman, Head of Engineering for Downing Atlanta. A close second would be Roger Mandeville. I'm sure there are others. We now return to the "knock" thread...

Don't think so.........I was talking to the engine builder for Downing and what he didn't know suprised me. Here's one.."For a turbo charged rotory the biggest port you can go with is a street port"....bp and pp don't work.....

Im sure the porting has alot to do with which turbo your going to run. Maybe he uses very big turbos and needs to keep velocity to spool it. I've also heard that a stock unported motor with a big turbo and good fuel management will make upwards of 600hp to the wheels.

HWO: what do you mean that a knock sensor will not pick up knock on a rotary. SO why does mazda use them? And a knock sensor will react much faster then you can and possibly save your motor. So why not use one.
