ams-500 opinions / review?

Hello all! I am looking at this boost controller, well... because I have read a lot about how precise and ... well it intrigues me. I have been staring at its wiring diagram and such for a good 2 days off and on now, and I don't quite understand what makes it so special. (obviously it has 2 valves, but I don't see how that could help make it more precise?) I think it might have something to do with it getting it's readings from a different location, but I don't quite see how getting the reading off the top of the wastegate could be a superior setting? I know I am missing something lol.

Here is a link to the manual
http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/att...ser-manual.pdf

Here is a quick screen shot of the manuals wiring up page.

If someone could maybe explain a little bit to me, that would be great!

Thanks
~Tweak

I'm going the ams route too, don't know which one yet either the 500 or 1000. Maybe in a month or so i have info for you. I've seen the 1000 with the use of the c02 canister in action and the guys who run the car has nothing but good things to say about the unit.

Yeah, but right now I just won't to know HOW it works. lol. I too have not heard anything except its amazing. I just don't know physically, how the two solenoids work, and how getting the reading off the top port .... work. I'm not sure if there is some crazy fuzzy logic math going on here, or what. lol. Please let me know what your experiences of it are after you get it.

Just so you know, u can use the cO2 on the 500 one also.

The way im reading this one solenoid is putting pressure on the top wastegate port and the second solenoid is releasing that pressure. It looks like the only thing they care about is the wastegate. Other systems read manifold pressure and try to keep that constant, these guys are only trying to keep the wastegate spring pressure constant.

Ok, thank you! So now I'm confused again... Is it going to have the normal advantages of an EBC (quicker boost right to the target boost) or is this basically just going to a few psi of pressure to the top (for what ever I set it to) and it will still open slowly?

I think I understand it now. It doesn't care what spring you have in there currently, it doesn't matter what intake pressure your getting. You just set it for how much pressure it is going to push down on the top of the wastegate, and that is what you get. It tries it's best to keep the pressure on the top of the wastegate right at that. In that respect, it makes me think ..... that it is somewhat of... smart manual boost controller? haha

I think you answered your own question, but if not;
you should get all the usual benifits of a EBC, the top port is being pressurized to hold the wastegate closed. Depending on how the solenoids are cycling you could hold it closed right untill target boost or as soon as the spring starts to crack. and id imagine everything inbetween.

I wouldnt call it a smart MBC, at least the way ive always set up MBC's i would call a regular EBC a smart MBC. This just plays with a concept that i thought dual solenoid boost controllers worked with. I could be wrong, never used a dual solenoid one, but i assumed that one solenoid for top port and one for the bottom port...
