87 turbo rx7 pretty slow, why?

I just checked out a pretty nice looking 1987 turbo rx7, however the way it ran was pretty bad. I could hear the turbo spooling and the boost guage showed significant boost, but i didnt feel the boost, and the rpms went up very slowly. I raced to with a N/A totally stock rx7 (1987 too) and I got my *** kicked by a lot.
What I am wondering is since the turbo is obviously doing something due to the noise, then what the problem is. The exhaust has a visible leak in the pipe right behind the muffler, the driver's side exhaust also has a lot more exhauast comin out then the passenger side(at least double). I have seen cars totally suck due to clogs in the exhaust and am wondering if that could be the only problem.
Is there some common problem with the turbos that would explain this? the car does have 130k on it, is it even worth considering at 2000?

any comments would be great.

Hmm. That would be my first guess too.

if its oretty nice looking (good condition) and everything is working correctly except for the motor then get it and trouble shoot. A nice 87 TII is hard to come by.

Yeah they are.. and I just happen to be selling mine. 'course, it's way the heck over here in Maryland.

I'd get a compression check done since internal engine problems are by far the most expensive thing to fix.
