Just got my 8374 supercore and compressor housing (Oh Yeah) and the casting is pretty rough. Flashing is still there in a few spots.
Also, are these flaws typical and expected? Unfortunately I'm not sure what kind of quality should be expected here, I'm not educated in turbo QC.
Before I go attack this with a Dremel, are there any bits that look like casting imperfections, but are there for a reason? Any known spots that should be addressed? I don't want to make a judgement error and get Grind Happy..
Not worried about external imperfections, just showing off this beauty that's bigger than my head
I received mine 2 weeks ago, and in comparison, yours is much better looking. On top of that, the machinist who finished mine put some nice gouges on the volute. Its quite pathetic a manufacturer would do all the R&D they did, and finish off their project with crap casting and miss QC. Anyway, car is going to drive like a monster, and last much longer than a set of twins at the power level I want. Best of luck
I don't think mine needs a machinist to finish it, I'm shocked to hear yours did, I would have returned it. Share some pictures if you have them please, so we have a record of expected condition.
This is my other spot of concern, but I think it should be easily corrected. No idea how important the inside of the volute is, I'm probably overthinking things. Sand cast vs investment cast, honestly none of us want these to cost even more than they do now.
I got a 7670 when they first came out and the castings on both housings were flawless. I was less than impressed when I got an 8374 a few years later. I didn't see any major issues, but you could tell the finish on the turbine housing wasn't near as nice as the first one was. I didn't see any difference in the compressor housing though.
