Can anyone recommend a clutch that will hold 500 whp? I want a 6 puck, sprung clutch. I've seen mixed reviews about the ACT clutch, what would you recommend? and as i just purchased an engine, and thought my old 6 puck clutch would still be good, im definitely on a budget it looks like the current clutch will need to be changed in under a year, there is less than 1/8" on each side

 

I have the ACT unsprung 6-puck. Running for 4 years now, lots of passes. 1.50 60's. Seems to handle the abuse just fine.

 

yep, i ran the act unsprung 6 puck........ over 600 whp and 1.4X 6 short times

 

Pineapple used to sell a 6 puck sprung ceramic clutch disc that held as good as a copper, but would last longer and wear the PP and fly wheel less. This is just what I remember reading, check pineappleracing.com. let me know what ya find, I've been looking to get one of these

EDIT: Just checked, its not on their website, so I emailed them. If I remember correctly, this was trickle down ceramic puck technology from big rig diseil trucks (talk about torque capacity).

Now that is good info, thank you. any chance you know the thickness of the metal in-between the pads?

Mine seems to have 5 pieces, the middle metal section (the actual disk), 2 thin metal pieces one on each side (same shape as the pad), and finally the two pads one on each side. how long do you think it will last judging from the pics? the first one really shows it well, the other two kind of blur the metal and pad pieces together

 

unless this is a straight track car I would recommend you the ACT Max Extreme Clutch. Thats the one Im running in my car. Its supposed to be good up to 587 lbs of torque and it is still a 6 puck sprung cluth so you wont be destroying the car while driving it. If it is a straight race car the yeah go with the unsprung 6 puck.

for that horsepower goal i can not recomend that solid 6-puck. but the act sprung hub organic thats rated to 400ft/lb torque shoud be very streetable and hold what your looking for. i believe its the street/modified. and if your on a budget you can get just the disk for pretty cheap if memory serves under 150$
I cant recommend the solid 6-puck but if you feel you must go that way do the sprung hub 6-puck. Reason being i currently have the solid 6 and it is drivable but i wouldnt call it streetable its very on/off but doable, it was easier to drive once i put on my trans brace as well. im also using a stock flywheel for the extra weight, if you have a lightweight flywheel that 6-puck setup i would call a race only setup. but everyone has different opinions of whats streetable/comfortable to drive.

I'm definitely going sprung, thats what the current one is and it was fine on the street. I'd like to get just the disk but cant figure out what brand mine is.

 

I've seen way too many of those sprung act clutches get rung out on the dyno or street.......noway will I ever use one again.

 

Go ORC twin plate.....thats what I've been contemplating lol

Currently running ACT street/strip solid face sprung friction plate with HD pressure plate. Holds fine at 20psi on a GT3574.........no idea on power but north of 400 would be my guess

I went from a sprung SPEC stage 3+ to the unsprung ACT 6 puck and it is very easy to drive. I can not imagine why anyone would have an issue with it on the dragstrip. My opinion best bang for the buck.

The spec was slipping at 400 ftlbs (rated much higher). Put the ACT in and its been holding fine, even 7k rpm drops at the track.

 

Ok, I finally figured out which clutch i have, its the stage 4 sprung 6puck made by Competition Clutch, the only mark that gave that away was CC but 1 C was backwards, thank god someone was familiar with it. I was very used to that after just a few days of driving, I called today and a new disk is $150.

I asked about the tolerances just so i could see if mine was still good. They said it comes new at .308" thick from pad to pad. They said .030" less than that was the max wear recommended. Can this be right? It seems to me that if I buy a new clutch and its worn out after .030" thats pretty rediculous.

I could see maybe .030" on each pad, but the lady said its for the entire width. So if its .278" thick its worn out.

I just measured, and its currently .3125" thick so I must have heard wrong or they quoted me wrong. I'll call again in the morning.

 

Just found out that the new version comes .318" thick. Mine is .3125", maximum wear is .030" and I'm only worn .0055" so I'm almost new, great news. thanks for the comments everyone.

 

I have the 4 puck unsprung ACT disc with their extreme pressure plate. I was running this on a 20B making alot more torque than most and it held up pretty well.

 

im in need of a clutch and have been looking at the act range but could you guys explain the difference between sprung and unsprung and the advantages and disadvantages of each

I've been running the Pineapple 6 puck sprung hub for a couple years now. It seems to be holding up pretty well, but I've been pretty easy on it too. 2k miles where of hard street use and some dragstrip use, and 1.4k miles are of me breaking in a new engine/needing a tune...so no high boost runs for me.
