3.5" exhuast / EFR 9280

New build from motor, cooling etc and plan to run the new EFR 9280( iwg)and wondering if there is a 3.5" mid pipe back system available on the market.

Seen plenty of mid pipes, resonators and down pipes that size, but no catbacks.

Fabricate your own. Exhaust stuff is easy.

At least in Australia you could buy a little tig inverter, helmet etc and materials for the cost of an off the shelf exhaust, depends if you have time and space to fab it.

Are SMB back in business?
Fabbing exhaust without a hoist is not fun or easy.

SMB is gone. Marcus Read is advertising on Facebook that he is getting the exact same SMB FD bolt-on parts remade by a different exhaust place in Sydney. Will they be the same quality and value as SMB? Jury is out on that. Everything that guy touches as a ridiculous FD tax applied.

A.C.E (Auto Craft Evolution) makes a Ti exhaust in 78mm and 90mm that is mid pipe back and reasonably priced (under $2,000).

RE Amemiya has the Stainless 90mm Dolphin tail that is mid pipe and cat back for under $1,500.

I think Nengun offers both those.

a 3.5 inch exhaust has 36% more area. at some point NOISE may be a consideration. i have no experience here so just making mention. if you find the noise is too much you then add different mufflers and are back where you started.

any actual experience w 3.5 and noise welcomed. the 9280 is an 830 rw rotary hp turbo

Personally, for a 9280 IWG, I would be using a 4" exhaust, or at least a 4" dump pipe/front section, taking into account overall flow requirements and the fact wastegate gas is shared with main exhaust flow. 3.5" will obviously be louder than 3". How loud is primarily a question of the construction and quality of the mufflers though. 3.5" or even 4" can be done with manageable exhaust noise if you have a muffler which is purpose built for street rotaries, like AES in Australia.

The RE Amemiya 90mm Dolphin tail has two giant oval mufflers so it will be fairly quiet, but the larger diameter pipe does let more low frequency escape which can annoy people by causing things to rattle and travelling through walls even at lower db levels.

Design, especially muffler has a lot to do with noise levels. I ran JIC Spec 90 3.5" exhaust on my FC and it was really loud, boomy and had drone. I remade it with Vibrant Street Power oval muffler instead of its fart cannon and a few other incidental changes resulting from going to the EFR 7670 and repairing it and it ended up really quiet at idle and cruise with no drone- but yeah, still loud at WOT.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I shipped my car to IRP a few months ago for a new motor, stage 3 street port, , Greddy Vmount and their brand new manifold with the new 9280. Basically, everything they recommend for a build at this level. Customer service has been on point with IRP.

WOT loudness won't bother me, but a ridiculous highway cruising drone will. If I can get away with a 4" dp and 3.5" catback/resonator, that would be great. I have about 100 sq ft of dynamat for a worse case scenario though.

I'm really anxious to see what this turbo/ set up will make at a modest 20-25psi.

There is an rx7 meet here in DFW every month or i think, maybe see if someone there has a 4 inch exhaust system you can hear before you commit to fabbing one up.
