1987 T2 - Turbo Upgrade

Ok, I have been watching on this site for awhile and tried to search the old archives but have not found much in the way of information on any 2nd generation turbo setups. I have had my car for years and have recently had to garage it as it needs an engine and turbo rebuild. Ideally I would like to take the oppertunity and upgrade the turbocharger and rebuild the engine properly. Is there any sites for turbo upgrading to the T2 that would give me some good information? I am not looking for crazy horsepower, I think I am looking at the 250 to 325 HP range. I am not sure what other modifiactions need to be done to achieve this level (intercooler, ecu, bov, boost controller, etc). All suggestions would be welcomed. I am looking at this as my project car for the next while and want to rebuild it so that it is a nice street machine (not intending to take it to the track). I intend on doing a lot of work on this car to ensure that it is sound and handles better then new.
Thanks in advance.

IMO, the best site for any FC technical information is RETED's site, www.fc3spro.com . He also has a link specifically for turbo upgrades... http://www.fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/TURBO/fullturbo.htm

You're definitely on the right track by first rebuilding your engine. A mild street port would help power a little, but isn't absolutely necessary for the horsepower numbers you're looking for.

As for turbos, it seems that many people go with a T04S or T04R turbo and an HKS cast manifold, as this is a relatively inexpensive, effective pairing. Greddy, HKS, Apexi, etc also make full kits but they're a little pricey for me, and I like the idea of being able to hand pick each component instead of buying a "kit" where most everything is included. Some people may like the simplicity though.
Another option to achieve 250-325 rwhp is to have your stock turbo rebuilt with an upgraded cold side, I know BNR ( www.rx7store.net sells them I believe) and a few others offer these. This will be cheaper than a full turbo upgrade, but won't allow for much in the way of upgrades in power beyond the levels you're looking for.

When upgrading the turbo, your two biggest concerns are fuel and heat. These are the two biggest culprits for blowing up rotaries.

Your best option is to go with a full standalone ECU to control timing and fuel. The Haltech E6X and Microtech LT8 are popular choices, but they aren't cheap.
Another option is to use the stock ECU in conjunction with an Apexi S-AFC to control fuel and a Fuel Cut Defenser (FCD) to allow you to boost past 8 psi. Plan in your budget to spend some more money having these tuned by a reputable tuner.

In addition to any computer you use, you'll need to upgrade your injectors and fuel pump. People have different theories about injector sizing, but a set of 720cc injectors should do the trick. The Walbro fuel pump is a popular choice, as is the fuel pump from an FD. Also, search the forum for tips on rewiring the fuel pump for full voltage.

There are a bunch of additional parts that I'd recommend, including a front mount intercooler (you may be able to get away with the stock top mount at 250hp, but not 325 hp) - [Greddy makes a nice kit], a new metal radiator (Koyo, K2RD), boost controller, clutch (ACT or Racing Beat are great), gauges (boost, temp, egt).

This is just a general overview and shouldn't be considered 100% complete, but hopefully it gives you a good idea on what to expect. Definitlely search around this forum and use RETED's site for reference, there is a wealth of information on both sites.

at least trash the s4 exhaust manifold and turbo hot side housing for the s5 stuff with ported wg. your boost will creep no matter what you do with the s4 setup.

cheaper way- ported engine, s5 turbo and manifold with ported wastegate, upgraded compressor wheel, afc, walboro, 720s, 3 inch racing beat turbo back exhaust, boost controller, wideband o2, rtek computer and tuning should get you what you want

more expensive better way- ported engine, hatech stand alone computer, t04 turbo, hks manifold(i guess), tail wastegate, custom fmic, custom downpipe to rb exhaust, big injectors and pump. much safer to engine life IF TUNED PROPERLY.

Ultradef, I have to thank you very much. I thought I had seen and read all of the rx7 sites but some how I have never seen the mother of them all for FC3 owners. Awesome stuff!
JG13b, I will definetely persue some of the S5 parts, that is a great idea. I think I now have some reading and costing to do.
If any other ideas are out there I am game.

I am planning on doing my own rebuild, just wondering if I can port my own engine or if that is a real dumb idea to try. I think all I would be after is a real mild port but maybe doing that by hand is to risky. Anyway, maybe that is another post for another forum on another day!

Practice makes perfect. Try to grab a few trashed housings and practice on those before you feel comfortable porting the housings that you will be using.
