13BT on the engine dyno. Any tuning tips? (Pics too)
Hi,
Got my 13BT set up and started on the engine dyno today. Played around a little bit and everything seems fine. Looking for some sample ignition curves. I know it wont be optimal running it on my engine but we're mainly looking for some hints (this is our first rotary)
Setup is as follows:
13BT Streetport
Turbonetics 62-1 with A/R 1.0 Q-trim
4 1680cc injectors
Autronic SM2 v1.99
Autronic 500R CDI
4 Crane Cams LX-92 coils
First pic is from the dyno room and second from the operator room.

there is some good info in the engine management section of the forum. might want to search through there. i don't know much about tuning, but lots of people like the air/fuel ratios somewhere around 11.5:1 if i remember reading correctly...

He won't have any problems getting it to idle with those 1680cc injectors and that Autronic unit he has. Makes me jealous I wish I could afford the Autronic units until then I'll stick with my Microtech LTX12S. Shoot this guy an email enzo13b@optonline.net he is on this site also search for enzo250 he is an Autronic dealer in New York. Hope this helps.

13btnos is right for sure. The Autronic unit control these injectors very good and idle is not a problem. It stays solid at 900 rpm at the moment (A/F around 14:1), I will check how low the injection time is on monday.

Yes I have the 1.99 autotune chip in my SM2 but we are not using it on the dyno (dont have an Autronic analyzer there. We're using a M&W unit). I have used it on a couple of audi 5 cyl and volvo's before its a very good feature.

You should contact Enzo, on this forum BEFORE proceeding. He is the only active member at least in this section, that has an Autotronic (he is a dealer). As far as parameters for timing, splits, and air fuel, there are some generalities, but use them with caution. Rotaries do not tolerate detonation, one event can break a seal. Basic rules of thumb, while tuning, I would run the absolute highest octane you can get. If you are going over ~15lbs of boost I would recomend 111 or 116 for tuning. Up to 15 psi 100 will work. European octane ratings are several points higher than our octane ratings, so be careful with those numbers. For a target AFR, 10.5:1 is generally the safe number we use, once the motor is on the car, and you have a better idea of actual AFRs under real load, you can go to 11.0:1, there is very little to be gained by going leaner, and alot to loose(motor). You did not mention plugs, up to ~15psi 9s are OK, above that 10-11.5 are the ranges to use I would use the coldest plug that does not foul. properly tuned a car will run fine even on 11.5s all day long. For timing I would read all the threads in the engine management forum, and particularly the thread above the top of this section"advancing timing at high RPMs". A rule of thumb is one degree of split for each pound of boost. Target max EGT is ~700C in the manifold. As far as total timing refer to the thread above, and to those in the engine management forum, remember to maintain split when adjusting advance. For timing you want to increase advance gradually toward your target, looking for a consistent increase in torque. As soon as you see peak torque, stop, and I would back it off a notch. There is some more power to be had by narrowing split, but I would not recomend it on your first attempt at tuning a rotary. good luck, Carl Byck
