12a turbo setups
hi peoples.
At the moment, I am having my 12at engine rebuilt.
extend ported
exhaust ports opened
all new seals, springs and rotor bearings etc.
On it is the stock mazda turbo, (this will be used on 5 psi as i "run" it in) I also have a s5 turbocharger (stock) and I have the option of buying a quite cheap T04 setup with manifolds to suit my engine.
Whats the best to do u think, after the engine is ready to be upped in power and boost/flow? would it be wise to go sttraight to the T04? I'm guessing its stock specs, and hasn't been flowed or changed in anyway. What would power be with that setup "approximentally" at the wheels? I would think around 160rwkw's+ with a decent EFI system, and 10psi+ boost
thats for your opinions/suggestions.

I've been in a 12A Turboed Series 2 RX7 that was running a stock series 5 turbo. I was very impressed. On a street driven 12A I think it's a great choice. You could go for a full T04, but I'm not sure the extra expense (including an external wastgate) is worth it. Being that your RHD you'll obvoiusly need to make a custom manifold to clear the steering box regardless of which turbo you decide to use.
Remember that the two factory 720/800cc injectors aren't going to get you far. The easy option is to buy an adaptor to graft on a series 4 inlet manifold as it gives you a set of secondary injectors. Throw the 12AT 720/800s in as secondaries and two series 4 550's in as primarys and your good to go.

Beg to differ. You can do EFI cheaply, its just a different way of looking at the problem and avoiding buying high $$$ shiny bits.
A 12A to 13B adaptor is cheap enough. Wouldn't do it that way meself, but each to their own.
However if someone wants a carb and knows how to tune it right (a rare thing these days with webers) I wouldn't try and talk them out of it.

tons of people have draw through to4 turbos, just look at the turbo aircooled vw crowd. just about everybody with a turbo is drawthrough and carbed. with the majority of people using the to4. just check out turbonetics or some place like that and they will be able to help you out.
Carb equals more power? Yeah right.
Easier to tune? Don't think so.
More relieable? Not likely.
Chaper? Well probally yes.
Ok I'll give you 1 out of 4.
The only reason to adapt the s4 13B Turbo intake on is it gives you a set of secondary injectors without having to fabricate a fuel rail and injector bosses. The adaptor is also cheap to buy or easy to make.
As far as the turbo goes, it all depend on what you want. Of course your going to make more power with a properly sized T04, but the S5 turbo offers decent power for much less.
