do you know that Mazda is showcasing a new rotary engine?

it is tagged the 16X.

16 for 1.6 liters V 1.3 currently. anyway you slice it it is 23% more displacement. the engine achieves this larger displacement by lengthening the stroke on the E shaft and thinning the irons and making up that dimension by widening the rotor housings and rotors!

so the E shaft is the same length and the motor has the same exterior dimensions.

in addition, the motor has Direct Fuel Injection... into the combustion chambers! i would assume the location of the injectors is on the rotor housings. there's lots of hp/tq pickup w direct injection.

at the same time there's lots of Mazda mumbling about the new restyled RX8. which is in need of a MOTOR.

most of this is in the newest (Jan) Car and Driver.

after i posted i found a couple of well developed threads on the motor. oooops.

it appears the rotors are thinner not thicker and the side housings are aluminum!

Howard
thats basically where I left those thread discussions myself I am excited to see that mazda is going back to the narrower rotor.

Even though I run a 13bt myself, I have allways thought that the narrow 10a/12a rotors had better resistance to detonation/ seal flex due to the shorter seal length, and that the 13b width was an engineering cop out.

wait, so are all the housings aluminum? Can we say the new engine is "all aluminum" like even the front cover etc?
