FD: true HID Conversion

True HID with Ballast conversion.

Metal cone in the headlight removed which gave greater peripheral and deeper lighting.

It also blended high and low beam to an extent that can be controlled by leveling the lights to a desired beam height.

The pics don't do it justice since it's so bright that my fog/driving lamps are reduced to markers.

I have to adjust the headlights a bit, but they allow me to go 100MPH+ on the freeway without any street lights.

I can see far enough to avoid these ******* deers that think it's a good idea when "moving street lights" roam around.

Those are bright. So which did you get? I am still deciding on which one to get. The bulbs that the FD uses are 9003 but I only find 9004, 9007 etc. HID kits.

You know, those lights are glaring. That glare cap you took out serves a purpose. You can't have low and high beam combined and not have glare.

Post some patter pics after you've adjusted the lights. I'd like to see whether you can get a good horizontal cutoff (so that others aren't blinded).

Whoops-- that should say, "pattern," not "patter."

Actually I still get a reasonable horixontal cutoff.

THe difference is just some slight additional peripheral and fill lighting in other reagions...... mostly on the sides.

The front is still adjustable so that it doesn't blind oncoming traffic.

Do you have pics of the beam? Does it light the ground real good?

I've done the same thing.. took the inner shield..

I think its better than projector HID.. The light concentrates too much and causes blinding.. This way you get more wider field and less concentrated beam.. I could be wrong on this.. but Like Batman's.. I love my HID's.. best 340 I spend.. I have Hella bulb and blasts 6000k.. gives slight blue-ish color..

I did the installation myself.. But haven't driven in the rain.. I hope I seal everything.. and I think the blasts are water proof.. Hope it doesn't blow!

Installation too me about 2-3 hours..

HIDs are "arc" lights. The arc is in a gas. The ballasts bump the 12 V of the car up to 400 or so and limit the current so they don't melt your car ;-). They consume approx. 35 W each, compared to an H4 at 55W low beam 65 W high beam.
The only problem so far is they haven't figured out how to put both low and high beams in one bulb. So to convert, you either loose "high beam", or figure out how to put in two bulbs. Most people who have installed them find low beam just fine. The RX-8's HID are awesome. Many new cars with HIDs only are HID on low beam. They are still too expensive to add all that stuff for High beam as well - eg Infinity G35.

So now that the US feds. are shutting down the aftermarket sources for ballasts and bulbs, what is everyone going to do? I wonder if this is where all the stollen HIDs from Nissan Maximas are going (New York area)? The owners of those cars are hopping mad! Several owners have gone through 3 sets already,at $2000 per.

They can't ban all the HID's.. I would order thru Japan or Europe.. Hella and Philips are already made in Germany.. I would not worry too much about.. Its almost impossible to shut down all aftermarket HIDs.. And No way cops will pull you for it.. Most of the cops don't even know what kind of car I drive...

And those who knows about cars.. they seems to admire RX7's.. Its those Honda;s that they might care for..
