Hi peeps

When I was at SS18 I noticed the Hot Water Labs guys had a new sleepy eye kit for the FD...

I took this photo from their booth



And now they have it up on their site:

Does anyone have any more info on this kit? Like what light source are they using? Actual lighting quality etc...

 

The projector looks like a mini h1 which has good performance but unless that kit had been sealed which doesn't look like it water and dirt will quickly foul the projector up.

Do they ever go back down or sleepy forever?

I remember with the KS kit, they had a rod to adjust how far the lids open.

if you look at the picture that he took from their booth, you can see on the side the mount points

 

That would be really disappointing if they were sleepy forever

 

I don't see the point of a sleepy eye kit that doesn't retract. I guess this design gets around the problem most other sleepy eye kits get bogged down with and that's the engineering of a new retracting mechanic.

I do like the way it looks though.

 

Agreed.

I hope that they retract because if they are static IMO, it loses the whole point.

First off - I'm so happy to see companies like HWL still developing for the platform... and this could have been so good.

BUT... The square opening & the fixed (non-retractable) design. Ugh...

 

I just sent a message to HWL and they confirmed that the lights are in fact fixed sleepy eyes. Which is a bit disappointing to me personally.

I guess this is ok for a show car, but for a daily driver, lowering my pop-ups is a must. There is so much appeal to having pop-up lights...

I do however like the look of the HWL lights because they remind me of the Veilside sleepy eye kit. I really dig the square headlight. For example, I really do not like the Knighsports dual round sleepy headlights for some odd reason...

The square headlight feels very retro '90's to me.

But oh well...

 

Agreed I like that a company is producing products for our cars. But I"m at a loss that these lights don't go down and sit flush with the bumper. Just odd

 

I think the appeal of the way HWL did this set as a fixed pop up is that there is no gap at all by the opening at the back of the headlight when these are "in the up position", which is only possible with a top cover which never has to go down. They are a perfect contour all the way around the top "cover" area. I think they should have made them even slimmer though..

I'm designing my own front shroud for some ultra slim pop-ups which can be retracted manually when needed. LED lighting is for "For show purposes only" (-ha), though they rival most headlights output supposedly. (Also doing two projectors in each of the bumper lights.)
