The transmission cross member bolts to any 2nd gen rx-7 using the same 4 bolt locations one the underside. There are 2 bolt locations on either side of the transmission tunnel. These locations are the same for S4 or S5. The cross member was changed from S4 to S5.

An S4 transmission requires an S4 cross member.
An S5transmission requires an S5 cross member.

The S4 and S5 transmissions are shaped differently in regards to where the cross member attaches.

SirCygnus - your wrong man. The s4 trans mount has 2 bolts hold the bracket on, while s5 has 4 bolts holding the bracket to the transmission.

Are you SURE you have a s4 transmission? Both transmission mount plates looks the same, it's the bolt that hold the mount to the transmission that is different. Thus s4 trans with s4 bracket.

 

Pretty sure there are different sized flywheels and clutches between some years. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

 

He was talking about the crossmember between turbo s4 and s5 transmissions. Not the difference between N/A and turbo transmissions.

He is wrong about the crossmembers though. I've got a s5 transmission in my s4 and I'm using a...........drumroll............ s5 crossmember.

 

There's a difference in the counterweight between the S4 and the S5, or there's a difference in the clutch and flywheel size between the NA and TII. Other than that, there's no differences that I'm aware of.

 

so what is the verdict then? will the s5 na tranny bolt into my s4 na car, or will i have to modify the cross member? (note- i have both the s4 and s5 cross members)

 

alright so now im confused... i have a standard s5 tranny that im gonna put in my standard s4 car, is it going to bolt up with either an s4 crossmember or an s5 crossmember?...or am i going to have to modify one of the members to make it work? i checked the wiring and its going to connect just fine.. sorry for the double post i thought i clicked the wrong place when my post didnt come up haha

 

S5 tranny, use S5 crossmember.

so the s5 tranny bolted up perfect (USING S5 CROSSMEMBER), so no matter the year, as long as its a second gen, the trannys will swap from na to na. Thanks for the help for sure though guys.

Turbo crossmembers can mount to n/a trans. Fly wheel and clutches are different just use the same series crossmember and trans. I swapped S4 TII Trans in my S4 Vert you just have to get rear end and driveshaft and half shatfs (axles or) TII To n/a drive shaft.

 

I've had a look at a Turbo/NA crossmember from the same series and it seems as though the only difference is a slightly different hole location. If you've looked at one up close, there's slotted holes in the main body, then a plate with round holes welded to it to place the hole at one end or the other. That plate simply places the hole in a different spot for the NA vs. the Turbo crossmembers.

 

Mine went in perfectly. it was a big fat sloppy bitch putting it in damn near by my self but it went in perfectly like stock but mine is a vert also so I dont know if that made any difference!!!

 

back to confirm from my own experience that the s4 crossmember does NOT work with an s5 tranny and s5 tranny mount, well the center stud fits in place, but the rubber blocks with studs on either side didn't line up. So I'll be getting an S5 crossmember before too long. It didn't look to easy to modify either, much easier to cough up the dough for the S5 crossmember, new from mazdatrix I think it's like $80 bucks.

To clarify if you use an s4 tranny, you'll need the s4 tranny mount and s4 crossmember. To use an s5 tranny, you'll need the s5 tranny mount and s5 crossmember. So it shouldn't matter if the car is s4 or s5, just make sure the mounts and crossmember match the series. Then again I have no idea whats up with the automatics so I don't know if there is an exception there?

 

Automatics mount to the car in a different location then manuals. So the same logic applies, use the transmissions series crossmember, but you will need to make a custom bracket to connect it to the mounting holes.

 

Ok sorry to raise a cluster f@@k thread from the dead..... lets all understand that I am not all interested in what crossmember fits to what.... what I have in my car works, with the exception of the speedometer now. I swapped a s5 JDM turbo tranny into my s4 US turbo, now my speedo doesnt work. Can anybody makes sense to what is referenced in this quote?

I just swapped in a S5 JDM TII Trans into my S4 n/a car, speedo is just fine. Did you remember to reconnect the cable? I forgot to do that once and felt really stupid a couple days later.

 

Yea, I'm sure its attached, lol. I'll double check to make sure it's completely engaged though.
