I am wanting to install an E-fan from a ford taurus and I have some questions. I was wondering if the fans differed in the different models, because when I searched I found the fans everybody was using were single fans, but on my Mom's 99' Taurus it's a dual fan. I was wondering if both fit on the rx-7's radiator or do you use the stock shroud with the new fan and where did you the fan?(Junkyard or auto parts store) Also I'm wanting to use a thermostat that is pushed into the radiator fins to control it and was wondering if you can get that from a auto parst store. think you need the fan from older taurus.

 

what year taurus? I have also heard of a fiero fan too. Which is better¿ I want to do this before I Jet off to college

I'm wanting to wire up the fan so it's only on when the ignition is on, so I was going to wire it to the leading ignition coil, but I'm not sure which wire to hook it up to. Could somebody just tell me Which wire to use. Thanks

 

Thats probably not the best idea, you will be pulling power all the time, and the e-fans take up quite a bit of amperage. Plus, at higher speeds the fan isn't needed as the amount of air going through the rad is much more than the fan can pull in. Best to use a thermostat.

 

Cake's article ignores a lot of physics. Consider it "National Enquirer's Look at E-Fans"

Most v6/FWD fans will work. I have a 95+ Sunfire/cavalier (which are 4-cyl cars) fan run off a switch.

 

i would recommend forgetting about the taurus, and install fans from a MR2.

I just did this, and am currently creating a walkthrough on the subject.

#1 you can find them cheap, got mine off ebay for $25 shipped.

#2 they are the perfect size, only needed minor trimming to fit around the upper radiator hose.

#3 they are super strong. it's a dual fan setup, and i only need one fan to keep it cool. other fan is set to turn on with the A/C

 

also, make sure you get a temperature controlled relay for the fans.

I chose to use one from Derale (summit P/N DER-16759), because it was adjustable, and has provisions for running in conjunction with the A/C system.

total for me was around $75 for the entire mod (fans, controller, bolts)

The fans I am using are from an MR-2, and they include their own shroud. To mount them, I just drilled one hole on each side of the fan assembly to match up with some holes on the radiator that were originally used to mount the shroud.... On a side note, these fans kick some major butt. They really seem to put out the airflow, so I was considering using two separate fan controls so that one would start up at a lower temperature than the other one would. After I installed the 2nd gen radiator, I had trouble mounting the fans, so for now I only have one of them on there until I have time to figure out the mounting. One fan alone works just fine, so two should be more than enough..

To control the fans, I'm using a dirt cheap adjustable fan control from autozone. Works pretty well once you get it set at the desired temperature. This is the link to the part....

I bought a 16 inch fan and thermostat from autozone that I put in a early 90's taurus fan shrowd. I don't want it running the battery down when the car is off thats why I wanted to know which wire to use, but I have already figured it out. I THINK the fan is supposed to pull 3000CFM's, but I'm not to sure about that. The thermostat that I got is supposed to be relay free too, but I'm also not to sure about that.

yeah same here. now when one does show up its going to be al of us bidding on it. Theres got to be a better way to find one. Ive never seen an MR2 in any junkyard ive been too.

 

found out about the MR2 option Last week from Kentetsu's profile, looked on ebay, and just happened to find one closing in an hour with no bids...

Got mine from a junkyard for like ten bucks. I'm pretty sure its one of the '80s models... It was pretty rusty, but after an acid dip and a little paint, not bad at all. Really puts out the airflow too.

 

So, the MR2 is thinner than the Taurus or Fiero? If so, can somone post the dimensions and thickness?

NO, not good.

Go buy a 30 amp relay and wire the relay to the battery, then to the fan.
Tap into a 12v source that is turned on/off with the key and hook that to the raly for the switching.

This will allow the fan to come on and off when the key is on and off, and allows the relay to power the fan. This way you not pulling more amps thru a factory wire that was not designed to carry that load (results in fire or melt down NOT GOOD).

If you need more hel pwiring up the relay there are a few of us in here that can help with that.

 

Is this the MR2 fan? And do you know the year it came from?
So is that the 2nd gen rad? If so did this fan mount to the 1st gen rad easy?
My gsl-se rad has been redone so I am gonna keep her but would like to run this fan setup you have.

BTW - if you add your panel back between the rad and the hood it will direct the air more thru the rad instead of bypassing it. You might run cooler than you are now.

 

Please explain. While the article is due for revision (slightly clearer wiring instructions are needed, and mounting needs to be dealt with in greater detail), there is certainly no ignoring of physics.

 

My thermostat is designed so I don't have to use a relay and I'm running a fuse right after the 12v power source, Do I still need a relay? and if not the ignition coil then where?

 

Where do the power to the fan come from? Is the thermostat hooked direct to the battery then powers the fan? If so then don't worry but keep a fuse in line.

If the fan is wired without a thermostat then I reccommend using a relay to switch the fan on and off. Depending on the thermostat you could still use a realy and have the thermostat be the switch to open and close the relay inturn powering and not powering the fan.

 

Spray self expanding foam in nose of car and around the stamped steel radiator support panels, it will direct *all* air thru radiator and oil cooler and lower temps.
