FD3S: DRY Carbon Fiber OEM Rear Hatch
I have talked to Ken at Shine about doing this. I want a Rear Carbon Fiber OEM style Hatch. There are a few available (Seibon, VIS, RaceOnUSA) but they are made from wet carbon fiber so they will flex if you bolt a wing on it. Also the fitment of those hatches isn't that great. Ken said that he would make one if we had enough interest. He said that they would be around the $500 - $600 range and they would fit perfect. I am starting this thread to see if we have enough interest for him to make a mold.
ONLY put your name on this list if you are 100% in. I think we would need about 10 people that are 100% in to make this happen. Ken, I can give you a deposit. I am sure that everyone on the list would have to give a small deposit to show that they are commited to buying this. INTERESTED LIST: 1. PDViper77 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. |
Just to clarify (because i'm curious), this hatch would be made of pre-preg carbon fiber, not the typical lay-the-cloth-out, slather-on-resin, squeegee it off method, correct?

For that price, hell yeah.

Interested, I know shine makes an excellent quality product, I had their FEED kit on my FD before, but I'd like to see some comparison weights and fitment pics. Dry Carbon is the way to go.
|
Is there a estimate of how much lighter the carbon fiber be over the stock one?

Bad time of the year money wise for me/most people but how can I miss out on a quality "DRY" carbon fiber hatch. I'll find a way. As long as the FD doors get delayed until at least February, I should be fine. 7 is lucky.

Looks like we only need about 3 more serious guys in on this. Remember, only add your name to the list if you are 100% IN. These hatches will be about the same price as the other but they will actually fit correctly instead of the garbage Seibon/Vis/RaceOnUsa hatches.
PS: HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY! Phil |
I would be interested if he could ship to Japan.. :D

somethings come up and i'm gonna have to remove myself from the list

Stock plastic pieces going to be able to snap in? Wiper hole or no wiper hole?
Tim |
I'm hoping no wiper hole. My car is a r1.
|
I would like the wiper hole :)
|
How is all looking so far?
|
^^ +1
|
I talked to Ken yesterday on the phone and he said that he would let us know within 1 week if he will build it or not. It would have NO holes. Thats the best way to do it.

only $600+ shipping? really? no wiper holes though? no plastic mounting?
|
how is the hood going to stand when it open? is it going to work just like the oem rear hatch?
|
I say make every hole like stock except wiper hole.
|
We can produce this. Thats not a problem. Ive asked many of the members of the board if they would be interested. We just have to get to it thats all.
We would prefer to do it without any holes. Holes can be drilled anytime, but you can fill carbon fiber :). Ken |
It would be great if he can offer this with the FAL plexi glass too..add me on

Is this a 100% stock replacement? Take stuff off old hatch and put it on new including my 99spec wing? If so, I'm in.
thewird |
You'd have to drill holes to mount your wing, just as you would if you had a wingless stock hatch to begin with. So. . . you're in? :)
|
So all the plastics and such would be able to go back on no problem?
thewird |
Im just wondering about the holes for the hinges and shocks. those would be very hard to mount without some sort of support to screw into. and will there be a latch bracket molded in? wing, washer and wiper holes not on it are actually better for me.. also dont care about interior mounting holes.
depending on all that you can put me down for 3 of them. |
If this will be a true dry carbon hatch count me in.
As far as the mounting of the oem parts, if the "general" hole marks are there like all of Shine's other parts that would work, not that I am looking to put it back in but it would be nice to have it there if need be. |
i'm in if ken can get the hatch to have :;

I have a question for you guys. Of all the manufacturers that currently provide a CF rear hatch, which in your opinions has the best mounting? I ask because if they can do it, we can do it :)

no of them.... that is why.. you have to step up for it ( other can't do it...does not mean you can't have it done?.. i know u can do it, ken... so make it!!
|
According to 7parts.com (who makes a wet carbon hatch and everything else), the stock hatch shocks can't be used as they are too strong. I would think you could find a slightly different location to mount the shocks to the hatch so that they would exert less force while still opening it up enough.
|
Since the hatch is one of the heavier parts on our cars that can be lightened a lot with carbon fibre without affecting anything. I think a lot of people are looking at this as "save 24 pounds for $500-$600 without looking like you have carbon fibre". That is why being able to put all the stock stuff back on would be awesome.

+1 on hydrolic issue.. is oem going to work out with the dry carbon?
i will be in on this in the future, probably when production begins, need to scrape up money after the holidays. will the inside be smooth?? i dont like the whole plastic cover thing going on back there. |
All I need is to be able to mount it to the stock hinges and latch it. the stock shocks would be nice, but are not nessisary. And like I said before, I also dont need holes for wings, wipers or anything else. I can also guarentee an order of at least 4 hatches, and mabey more.
|
I think we will have to come up with our own solution on the hatch shocks. I think almost everyone is going to want the hinges and latch to work like stock. It would be nice if the under side looked ok with out the stock plastic to further save weight. I would imagine some would want the holes at least marked for drilling to put the stock plastic back on too.
