What's up, Birmingham?
I signed up on this board an eon ago (well, two or three years, anyway...), back when I was living in an apartment and had no chance of actually buying and working on a project car, but that's all changed. I now own a house, complete with a garage/basement that's got a 1st-gen-RX7-shaped void in it. So I'm on the hunt. Budget is tiny, but cars of dubious moral character and possible un-roadworthiness are not exempt from consideration.
The feelers are out, folks. Looking for a car to work on (plus future autocrass, weekend fun, weekday commuter if it's reliable enough), so as long as it runs and drives at the moment, everything else is fine by me. What I would love to find is a rough looking solid runner that I can strip, work the metal some, get it running great and tear up the roadways with.
Anyway, figured I'd stick my head in here and just say hello- there seem to be one or two other Birmingham-area types in the forum.

North and South of town (so all over, really). I live in Warrior and work out near Greystone at the end of 280.
Obviously I want the disc brakes and LSD from the GSL-SE, but other than that, I'm not too picky. I like the looks of the non-sunroof models, too, though- just one less thing to leak... And ALL of that is negotiable.
Definitely sub-$1000 for the car itself. After all, I have to budget for upgrades- and this is meant to be a project car/ race car/ beater, so stuff that people have already dumped a lot of money and time into, I won't be that interested in.
I have a PM going back and forth with a guy up in the Spring Hill/ Franklin area. He sounds like he might have one or two that will fit what I want.

We didn't get to first names yet, but if that's "Fire85GSLSE" on here, then cool. That's the guy I have been talking to about a couple of oldies the last day or so.

Also just to let everyone know wrigh003 has bought a 82 GSL Auto Silver with black interior. Only damage to the body is on the header panel near the head light bucket. Car has under 100k on it and runs great. He will need some support from some of you if you can. Anyone have a header panel you can sell him?
He will have most of the parts to convert it to a 5speed if anyone wants to help.
Here is his car so keep an eye out for him. He will get it this sunday.

Yup. I'm fired up. I have been looking for a project car for a long time, and now I am about to get one. Friend of mine back in HS (Cookeville, TN- wonder if Magilla is on here...) had a streetported '87 NA that was hilarious fun to ride in- at some point, hopefully my little first-gen will be that much fun.
Wish I could make it to the GTG this Sunday, but my folks will be in town to visit us and El Nino for the first time in several months- they probably wouldn't appreciate it if I took off for teh afternoon leaving them at the house with wife and baby (though, being new grandparents, maybe they wouldn't mind... HA! I'll try to make the next one, though.).
I have already found the Birmingham pull-a-part yard (at least online)- according to the inventory list there it seems they have at least a couple of 1st gen RX7s that I should be able to cannibalize for a header panel if needed, and maybe find a good manual transmission (and any little miscellaneous stuff needed) to get the thing swapped to 5-speed.
I haven't seen it in real life yet, but the header panel seems to be just tweaked a little on the one edge. Since part of the point of buying this car is to learn to weld and do light DIY bodywork and stuff, I may try to see if I can cut it out and weld in good sheet metal or otherwise clean up that little spot. I am seriously thinking about trying to turn this car into a GRM $2006 Challenge car, too, so every cent counts, and if I can fix somthing that's already there and/or make it look passable with an investment of my time instead of paying somebody, then that's what I will have to do. :p Used parts, here I come!
MY wife is getting the idea too. I'm notoriously bad for not knowing what to get her for Christmas/birthday/etc., and so she generally starts dropping heavy hints a couple months ahead of time. One of those happened last night, and she followed that with "Oh, and I'm going to need to know what car parts you want for Christmas. You know I don't know much about that, so help me out."
Looking forward to meeting you guys on the next go around.

Well just made it home. Hope you had fun today with your new GSL.
I did forget to tell you that the front pass side tire has a bad valve stem. When I washed the car this morning I hit it and it leaked some air.
Hope the tranny, drive shaft, flywheel, pedals, header panel, muffler, etc. will help you out with the build. Hope to see it done in April at the Deals gap run. There will be a group of us driving over so once it gets close make sure to link up with us.
Talk to ya later. And remember Shanon has a few parts cars if you figure you need something else.

Phil, it was good to see you and everyone again, and to meet some new people.
Glad everyone made it, wish we had a better turn out but it was a good one at that.
Maybe we can try to do a cookout some time in the spring. That would have been fun.
So how did it all go down at the track?
Also when get those clips burned on to a disk, I want a copy.

I'm planning on tearing it down this winter and having it up and running nicely again under it's own power by April for sure- it may even have some new paint and the few minor/surface rust repairs and bodywork done on it by then- I guess it depends on how things go. Man, the 3-speed just HAS to be crippling this car. It shifts at 3000ish RPM every time- seems like a bit of a waste.
What's the seatbelt-looking deal for in the rear cargo area? Looks stock- is it to hold down the sunroof when you take it out?
One last thing- you mentioned that you thought you had a line on a 12a RB header(or other aftermarket) header? Keep me posted there- I'd be interested if that comes through.
I'm going to bump your thread in the Cars for Sale forum and tell everybody what a straight shooter you are. Thanks for the easy deal and answering all my questions. See you in April, if not before at a GTG.

I'm planning on trying to get that surging/ lopy idle diagnosed and smoothed if possible (but as you said, if it's been ported, it's suppposed to sound that way...), along with the little off-idle hesitation- I think all of that may be somewhere in the carb, if not in the fuel pump, which DOES sound like it's meant for a tank. I 've never heard one that loud before. :p

Well as for the carb, once it is switched over to 5 speed look up rx7carl or sterling on the fourm. Someone had a thread on what you could remove on the stock Nikki carbs. I would remove everything you can but the choke as that might be needed.
As for the header, well that car might end up in AL also to a guy that wants to build a SCCA car. We will have to see.
The strap in the rear should be two straps. And yes they are cargo straps. I put my sunroof in my rear withut using the straps when I was at deals gap and it did damage the sunroof so make sure to use them.
The fuel pump is aftermarket. The stock one is also inline and not in the tank.
Thanks for the kind words. I like to keep these cars on the road and go to someone that will enjoy them.
As for the loppy sound, well I got home and started my 13b streetported motor (have not started it in two weeks) and well it sounded like the one you have. But like I said without paperwork just assume it is a stock motor. 99k miles on stock is good so if it has been cracked and ported well you just got the deal of a lifetime and a sweet motor.
The auto was fun driving down to you. It did bark 2nd if manually shifting and pulled away from the 13b 4 port repu that was following me. Lets hope it is a ported motor as that will help you in the GTG.
Well gotta run.
