NC Mechanic NEEDED!!!
Good Day Folks,
Its been while since i have logged in. Okay so like heres the deal, i still have not been able to get this car to start on fuel from the injectors. i really have only been out there one time in like two months and all i was able to do was change my fuel pump and she still wont start. she will if i use starter fluid but no other time. i tried testing for grndn of the fuel injectors, i know they getting power, timing is good, pump is pumping fuel plus returning, everything appears to be good. The only thing i think is the issue is the air flow meter or the ecu. The thing is my money done i only have monies to pay someone to look the car over and parts off a 87 II to trade for the ecu or air flow meter as a trade.
I will pay someone $80.00 to look the car over and help me get her running. If you have a 87TII ECU,AFM, fuel resistor pack (mines had got some oil on it), fuel pressure resistor regulator(just in case mines is bad) that would be helpfull as mines could be bad, not sure if they are good. I am in southern pines NC, about 45mins from fayetteville, 1 1/2 hrs from reigh/greensboro,charlotte. i am moving to GA and really need my baby. I really have ran out of patience and have no time (trying to get my hours at work done) plus i done have a way out there like i did before. pls help out a fellow rx owner.

I would be willing to help, but you are about 3hr45 from me. I can try to help by PM/email. What model is the car? Looks like an S4 TII engine, but is it a swap? FC body? GSL-SE? other 1st gen?
Has it worked correctly before or is this an ongoing problem?

I got you on gas, food and beer i am like really stuck.
Kent, its a GSLSE w/87TII motor, tranny, ECU, complete right harness, custom left side, walbro fuel pump. I had a complete TII but the interior was in bad shape. I tried everything but not very confident on testing the resistance of the various components to find out if they are within compliance.

Do you have a multimeter? Have you tried to check for engine codes? I can guide you through some things to check. I would first check all of the voltages at the ECU. Most likely the injectors are not getting power or are not getting signal from the ECU (broken connector, bad wiring, etc.). I assume that it only runs on starting fluid and when you stop spaying, it dies, correct?
Since it runs, you know you have spark and signal from the CAS, so that narrows things down a bit. Also tells me that the ECU is at least getting power and is probably good (although the injector driver part of the ECU could be bad, I guess). Do you know if they are low impedance injectors or high impedance? Low impedance should have a resistor pack (usually by the AFM, I believe). If it was unplugged or missing, then no power to the injectors. I believe the split between low/high impedance injectors was mid-1987. So just depends if you have an early or later model.
Anyway, I'll help as much as I can. If you really get into a bind and can't find someone more local, I can try to come and give you a hand with it. I may be down that way in early August anyway, so maybe it would work out.

Start off with the S4 FSM:

You want section 4b. There should be an ECU pin out towards the end of that chapter. It will show what the voltages should be at each pin at the ECU. This test is supposed to be done with a warm engine, but it doesn't matter that much (especially for what we are checking).
Do this first as it will tell you if the injectors may not be getting power or major things like that. Once you do this, you can send the list of readings to me if there are some that you don't understand. Things like the coolant temp will be different than what the FSM says since the car will not be warm. Some other things will be off too, but most things should be in the range stated.
You can also search the 2nd gen section (or google) to see how to make an engine code tester (it is just two small LEDs or flashlight bulbs). this will tell you if the ECU has any codes (which could point to something that is disconnected).
Also, that section of the FSM will show you how to test the AFM and other sensors.
