How to you have a modified RX7 in NC?
Hey guys, I might be moving down to Asheville NC and I would like to know how can you drive a modified RX7 on the street?
I know I do not have to pass a sniffer with a 1991, but I'm sure the FMIC and the 3" downpipe to catback is going to fail me before I pull into the bay.
Do you guys just keep an inspection day set of parts in your garage (Cats, bumpers, intakes, smog equipment?
I would hate to have a "track" only car. I love driving my car street. Michigan may suck ***** but you can drive down the road with strait-pipes, slicks, and a parachute and no one cares.
Let me know,

You shouldn't have an issue at all. Just don't go to a main stream place. Find a "mom & pop" station that does it. You just need to pass safety which is very easy. I have a place in hendersonville that can do it for you if need be.( about 20 minutes south on I26) I used to live over there. There are plenty of people on here from Asheville area that can send you to the right spot.

Thanks for the info, that what I was thinking.
Here's the sections I'm worried about (Things I and most concerned about are underlined)
*** Funny thing is there is no section for seat belts, and actual safety device. I bring this up because I converted my car to manual belts from passive restraints to prevent bruising my knees during autoX (still wear a knee pad).
19A NCAC 03D .0541 EXHAUST EMISSION
CONTROLS
1. An exhaust emission shall not be approved if the vehicle is subject to a
safety or safety emissions inspection and any of the visible emissions
control devices placed thereon by the manufacturer are missing,
disconnected, made inoperative or have been altered without approval
of the Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources.
2. If a vehicle manufactured with an unleaded gas restrictor has been
altered or removed a new or reconditioned catalytic converter and
unleaded gas restrictor must be replaced before the vehicle passes
inspection. (Some newer model vehicles are manufactured without
unleaded gas restrictors).
3. An exhaust system shall not be approved if:
(a) The vehicle has no muffler.
(b) The muffler, exhaust or tail pipes have leaking joints.
(c) The exhaust or tail pipes have holes, leaking seams or leaking
patches on muffler.
(d) The tail pipe end is pinched.
(e) The exhaust system is equipped with muffler cutout or muffler
bypass.
(f) Any part of the system passes through the passenger compartment.
[Many mufflers are manufactured with a seep hole. The
presence of this hole does not constitute a failure.]

DEVICES

person to remove, disconnect, tamper with, or render inoperable any emissions

I am actually a inspector in NC. I can tell you that the "safety" inspection is a farse. One of the funnier issues is that they(NC) requires you to have windshield wipers..HOWEVER..You do NOT have to have a windshield No ****
Anyways, Like I said, if you go to a low key spot you will not have any issues. I got my FD single turbo with 3 inch straight exhaust and open wastegate passed without a double take.
I used to live in TC Michigan, I have to say I remember some crazy loud cars rolling around without a thought.
I converted our FC to manual belts as well. No issues at all.
