Getting Florida Plates

Hey, I am living on campus right now at FIT in Melbourne, FL. My car is registered at my parents house in IL. I really need to get FL plates because IL doesn't like my 4" catless exhaust. I have heard that I need to get a Florida lisence first. Does anybody know what I need to do?

I called the state DMV office here in Tallahassee (I do a lot of work with them).

You need to have the title. Anyone who has their name on the title has to be their to sign. The VIN will have to be verified (someone will walk out and look at your car). You need to have Florida insurance. After all this, it costs about $195 to get a Florida tag. The lady said you're not required to have a Florida driver's license, but they really prefer it. To get a FL license, it costs $20.

Well, my car has no motor in it right now, plus its back it STL. So how would they verify the VIN?

They wouldn't. Why would Illinois care about your catless exhaust if the car isn't running?

I have almost the same issue as you, and here is how I did it. I had a NC license and my car was registered to NC. To get plates you first have to get Florida insurance on the car. Once you have your proof of insurance, go to a tag office and ask for a form that will allow you to have the car inspected by a notary. This part is super simple if you know somebody that is a notary. Fill out the form, get it notarized. This shows that your car was "inspected" and that the milage is correct. Now that that form back to the tag place, making sure that you have all the information that is required for people coming from IL, as it varys from state to state. With the form, they won't give you any problems and you can get your tags. Just make sure you get a Florida license ASAP so you don't run into problems with the police or your insurance company. Thats how I did it, went smoothly Let me know if you have any other questions, I just did this like 3 weeks ago, so I assume nothing has changed.........

Because they require registered cars to go in for emissions test every year.

Hey PDViper, sorry don't know your name, but check out these local forums that could also help you out. http://www.brevardmotorsports.org/ and http://www.orlandoforums.com The first forum one of the admins is a member here, he has two FDs.

There is no way you can get your car verified by FL DMV if you don't bring it to them. Certainly they wil not go to your house to. The only way you can have it verifed with out being here in Fl is if you are in the military. Obviously you are not so your SOL. You just gonna have to wait until she is running again so you can get her here and have them verify it unless you prefer shiping it whcih will cost you around $700 one way.

I promise you man I just got 1 simple form from the tag place and took it to a notary, and the DMV won't ask any questions. Its just a paperwork issue, my car was still in the shop in pieces in the shop and I got my plates no problem. Just go and ask for it, and you are all set!!!

Ok thanks, yea IL has strict rules so that is why I am trying to get FL plates. I am going to try the notary thing and see if it works. My car is in pieces right now and I dont plan on getting it put back together until I get home in May. My tags expire in June! Also in IL, I put pulled over for having 35% tint on my side windows (that is a very light tint) and for having no front plate! One cop told me to just "drill into the bumper and bolt on my plate." I said . And best of all, my dad's and my lisence was suspended for 1 week because IL said my car was "unsafe" to drive because it won't pass emitions. That is why I am trying to get FL plates.

Ah, it's always tough to remember which states have emissions testing. That's one thing you've gotta love about Florida if you're a car guy/gal.
