Question Anyone in/near Gainesville, FL?

Hey guys,

I wanted to get more info about the Gainesville, FL area, esp. around Shands Hospital, so I figured I'd see if any rotary guys live in/near the area or are very familiar w/ it...?

TIA,

Well for what it worth Gainesville is great town to go to school in. Three of my brothers practiced at Shands in one capacity or another and they loved it.

the cost of living in gville is not cheap, but its not very expensive either.
you can get an apartment at around ~$550 a month for a 1/1.. or ~$750 a month for a 2/1 or 2/2..
ive seen those quite abit around town..
there is lots of things to do in gville if you like to party, but thats about it.

Hey Ramy,

Shoot me a PM. I'm 34 and have lived in the 'ville for the last 11 years. I also tend to setup a lot of the RX7 meets here. If you would privately like to tell me what you are looking for, I can probably give you a good idea of when, where, $, etc.

I won't ask for discounts! =)

hey ramy i live here in gainesville as well as i go to UF. Where i live its expensive, 4br 4 bth pretty close to campus is costing me about $620 with a carport.

Their are only 3 fd's here including mine, and jack lives here as well who does great polishing work from what i've seen, Tom owns the other fd and he is a great guy. All college kids here so people drive crazy and everyone revs at you where ever u go.

pm me if you have any general questions

Listed to Evo instead of me then...hahaha! =)

Pure...just FYI I know of at least 7 FDs in town (1 currently not running for certain).
You
Jack
Tom
Rory
Melissa
A yellow FD in Newberry of all places (might have been sold...used to be parked two houses down from mine)
Another white FD (not Melissa's)
And there is another guy with one in his garage somewhere that was trying to sell a few months ago (asking price was too high IMHO...it had a few issues if I recall)

Purple Porpoise closed down 3 years ago or more! =)

You do need to hit Burrito Brothers...that place is a Gainesville legend!

If you are coming from Cali or NE, Gainesville will be very inexpensive to you.

Pure...sorry about that...I even forgot Jim's silver FD! =)

Ramy...when will you be in town so we can have a welcome meet?

I've been thinking maybe Sunday, April 20th? Maybe something a little different...like a drive down the backroads to Ocala for something to eat? Then back to Gainesville on I-75. I'd love to shoot some videos from the 'vert of all you flying by.

Hell...I know several years ago that the Gumball had a stop at the Hooters in Ocala. I bet we could call them and ask if we brought 10+ cars if they'd block off an area for us or something.

Thoughts on this?

Send me a private message with your names, phone #, and email addy's. Every 2 or 3 months we have a get together and some of us go to some meets in other cities.

Out of curiosity...what color are the FB and FC? There are still about 10 RX7's in towns that I do not know or have not spoken to the owners of.

These include an S5 'Vert
An arctic silver S5 with RB exhaust that is super clean.
Blaze Red RX7 that a Hungry Howies driver has.
A FB with a (purple?) paint job and hatch louvres.
A nice lady who owns a clean, 10th AE (Deo at the Mellow Mushroom has the other 10th AE)
A black S4
...and a few more here and there.

Guys, plan on seeing another FD in gainesville soon. I'm going to UF in the fall and by then I should have an FD. So what is that 8 or 9 FDs in the area now?

As phinsn98 has hinted, that is DIRT CHEAP compared to what we face up here. I'm talkin about a studio/efficiency for $1000+ EASY (more like $1200 - $1300).

Kevin, PMed ya And I really like the idea of a meet...that would be great Not sure when I'm officially moving in yet tho...workin on findin a place first. I start July 1st tho, so I gotta get situated at least a few days before then.

Bryan, oh yea...you live down there...nice!

Eddie, PMed you too

Got the pm, pm'ed you back with my number. Give me a buzz. I think a welcome meet would be great. Wish there were this many FD and interest in G'ville when I had my FD. I'll have to live vicariously through you guys until I can secure another ride.

Let me know when and I'll try and be off work to make it.

Hey guys,

So I came down to check out places in Gainesville, and MAN...Florida is *beautiful*. Sun & palm trees...what more could ya ask for? I'm pretty sure I settled on a place to live; just waiting for the lease to arrive. In fact, while I was down there, on the way back up, I'm pretty sure I saw purerx7 drivin up (a few Saturday's ago on 301 Southbound...I was headed up 301 N to Jacksonville). Apparently, Jacksonville is a heck of a lot cheaper to fly out of/into than Gainesville, huh?

I do still have a few questions...

- I don't have an exact move-in date set yet, but it looks like I'm gonna be doin it U-Haul style haha. Anyone know of a company or some guys I can hire to help unload the stuff (furniture, etc) from the truck into my place?

- http://www.dmvflorida.org/car-registration.shtml and http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/smog-check.php indicate that that there is no inspection or emissions testing whatsoever...no strings attached?!

- Not that I plan on getting any tickets *ahem* haha but http://www.123driving.com/florida-traffic-school.shtml talks about the Online Florida Traffic School, mentioning that by taking it you receive "No points on your record for the current violation" and that there's "No Insurance increase, 18% Reduction of civil fine." So I take it either the violation doesn't appear at all on your driving record, or that Florida law prohibits such violations from being used to increase your premium?

- One more...I asked my insurance agent up here about Florida insurance, and I was told it's much higher than what I'm paying up here...anyone recommend a specific insurance agent (esp. State Farm)?

TIA!

Hey Ramy, we don't have any emissions or saftey inspections (anymore!), but there is one string attached to Florida DMV: The new car registration fee. Or they may call it an impact fee. Basically, anytime you buy a new tag, there is a fee around $120.00. I think it varies by location, or make and model or year of manufacture, but anyway, it is on top of your original registration fee. The only way around it is if you have had a tag from a previous vehicle anytime in the past. Oh yeah, here, the tag stays with the person, not the vehicle as in some states. Also, it has to be replaced every 5 years, (another little trick they use to get your money- I'm not sure if this applies to personalized tags) If you have had a tag in the past, you can transfer it onto your current vehicle for only the tag transfer fee.

I use Geico insurance. Not the cheapest or the most expensive, but they have never let me down in time of an accident. Been with them for about 15 years.

You can take traffic school to wave points assessed, and I think no increase on insurance. But, you only can take the class I think it is 5 times in your lifetime, so.... Florida does not prohibit violations to increase your premium. Also, accidents (depending on the situation) can increase your premium as well.

Now that we got all the boring stuff out of the way, are you going to be down here on the 31st? If so, you need to come up to Jax to the Meet at Cecil Field!!

Hope you will be able to make it.

Later,
Bill

I assume you mean a previous Florida tag, right?

Yea I saw that on the site...

I'm def. gonna shop around, but I was asking cuz I've been w/ State Farm for years, and they've always treated me right (and they don't hesitate to pay out too)

You can take traffic school to wave points assessed, and I think no increase on insurance. But, you only can take the class I think it is 5 times in your lifetime, so....
Whaaa? I didn't read THAT part. Darn...cuz I was about to say "man this is heaven!" haha

Florida does not prohibit violations to increase your premium. Also, accidents (depending on the situation) can increase your premium as well.
Yea I meant specifically on those violations that you took traffic school for...cuz here in VA, traffic school is for points violations only; you still get a premium hike for the ticket, since ANYTHING that gets onto your driving record (whether or not it carries points) is fair game for insurance companies.

Now that we got all the boring stuff out of the way, are you going to be down here on the 31st? If so, you need to come up to Jax to the Meet at Cecil Field!!

I wish...I'm guessing you mean May 31st? I'm not moving until mid to late June unfortunately...

LOL I'm gonna work on that. I dunno if I'm gonna have enough time to go through everything while I'm packing up and loading everything for the move, but I'll def. keep an eye out for it
