85 RX7 GSL - Removal of Radio /Radio Purchase

Can anyone tell me how to remove my radio. I tried to remove and have taken off the A/C and heater control ***** but cannot get the bottom of the plastic on either side of the ash tray to come loose. It almost looks as if it is connected to the plastic surrounding the automatic shifter. Can't tell what is holding this on.

Also, I'm thinking of seeing first how much it will cost to fix original radio/CD before purchasing a new one. What is anyone's thoughts on this?

If I have to purchase a new radio any suggestions on radios/CD players that fit best?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me.

If you have an automatic, I'm not sure exactly how you do it...

But on a manual car, you take off the shift ****, and lift up on the plastic section around the shifter. Gently, it's brittle, but it pops up, and you can lift it and move it out of the way. This exposes two screws on the bottom of the surround, these are probably the only two that you missed. Just don't yank out the center surround just yet, you have to remove a couple of lightbulbs first, then it comes right off.

I'll bet there's a FSM you can download with all the information you need in the first gen section.
