Type R's over the years have turned into a very good budget sub except they have turned more towards a Kicker type sub meaning they produce more SPL in sacrifice of SQ. JL Audio's equipment is geared towards SQ, but at the same time, be able to get pretty loud. If all you want is SPL, I wouldn't go for either of those. Find a Kicker L5/L7, put the right amount of CLEAN power to it, and port the subs and you will be happy. If you're looking for something clean and will BLEND into your highs, then JL Audio is the way to go. Just make sure no matter what sub you get, you are having the right amp going to it and it is producing it's RMS power and you aren't fooled by their PEAK rating which they advertise by.
