How to: Go from aftermarket stereo + amp to stock wiring

So I bought the car with a JVC stereo with an amp located in the 'trunk'. I want to go back to a stock headunit.

To do this, do I just pull out all the wiring that is connected to the amp & plug in the stock radio plugs back into my stock stereo or did the installation of the amp make it more difficult? I don't know how an amp is wired in... does it disconnect the stereos from the headunit to run, or does it simply not use those wires?

Also, I'm trying to install a 2001 "Sprit R" headunit in my FD. I bought the proper wire adapter to splice together... but the colors don't all match up. The cablefor the 2001 stereo has 2 more wires than the stock cables... I got them off of eBay... did I just buy crap cables... or is there something more to it?

If the person you bought the car from used a harness adapter for the head unit, it should'nt be a problem. You just need to plug out the aftermarket head unit and install the oem one. The only problem though is, do you have the radio code for the oem head unit?? The aftermarket amp should've been hooked up with an rca cable that plugs into the aftermarket head unit. If the amp was just used to power a sub, you don't have to worry about a bunch of wires. If it's a 4 or 5 channel amp and the stock location speakers were hooded up to it, you then have more wires to take out.

You can get the headunit really easy. It's not TECHNICALLY the Spirit R... it's the exact same thing... with some minor differences (I think a couple buttons have labels re-worded. However, the actual Spirit R stereo wouldn't work well with non-Jap radio frequencies. I don't know what radio frequency range they use in UK...

But the stereo was in 2001+ Mazda Proteges & the headunit sells for $50-75 for single disc, $125ish for the 6-disc on eBay.

(To make sure I understand) So I just need to reconnect the original cables (the aftermarket was installed with an adapter harness & everything should work? I then just have to pull all the wiring that is connected to the amp. Right?

If you want to make life easy on yourself you can identify the wires by popping the speakers with a 9V battery. You will not want to do this with the red yellow or black wires or blue wires. Simply touch a matching pair of wired to the battery posts and listen for a popping sound at one of the speakers. Repeat with all wires until you've found where they all go.

If you are no longer running a sub you will want to pull out the RCA cable going to the amp. Like Maurice said, if the speakers are attached to a 5 ch amp then you'll need to pull the wires and make sure that your OEM speaker wire are connected to the Mazda head unit.

I also recommend getting a polarity tester to insure that your speakers aren't anti-phasing.

If you want more specific help please give us more information about what is currently in place.
