FD3s RX-7 Build in Maya [3D]

No it's not Turbo'd
It looks like he modeled the entire shape of the car and then cut the panels... which makes me think back to my model, and makes me think I want to try that approach... as opposed to modeling each panel individually...

Nah i did everything seperate, the bumpers etc are all seperate meshes. And i acually like to poly model everything. Much more control over meshes with Poly's. I may start get the general shape, but then convert to poly's.

it looked like to me in the one shot from the maya window that you modeled in poly then converted to sub-divs and use the semi-crease and full crease tool to hold the shapes of the bumper/fenders/everything and that way it looks like a smoothed polygon but much better geometry and use of nurbs formulas as well. Am i correct? If so im guessing your file size is gigantic because of all the faces and irregular faces on the light/fender edges/ etc. Im in my second year in animation and im trying this just for fun but thats how i would model it. I would only use curves for outlines of the car to help me keep the general shape. Let me know because i got my image planes set up and im getting ready to start later. Looks real good though although the rim movement seems a little off, i think i saw a tutorial on rim animation somewhere online once that could be of some help, but hey if you do it for a living then go ahead. I have to get an internship this summer to graduate and i live in TN. Any ideas?

I've never used Maya, and since I'm a designer, not a modeler I'm not very great at 3d programs, but I did a very intensive BMW project and modeled it in Alias. Your FD looks great. Very realistic. I'd be curious if I can take an Alias .wire file into Maya and render it or play with the surfaces. I'd imagine so, I've seen Maya models converted to a format (IGES maybe) and imported into Alias....
Anyways, good job, modeling is so tedious. Are you in La? Want to model my senior project? Haha jk I think i'm going to do traditional clay, since its a Maserati, and something seems very in-genuine about modeling an Italian car in the computer!
BTW, I know the FD was developed as a clay model before production (as are almost all cars). Look at those surfaces! WOW! So much Volume. The theme for the FD was "Volume Control". I only hope that Mazda is hiring designers in April when I graduate!

Cool guys! sorry ive been away from this thread, lets just say Hollywood gives you a deadline, then they don't send you the footage until a week after they said we'd have it... But their Deadline dosent budge. So the last 8 weeks have been comprised of 15 hr days no weekends. Its finally over though, ahhhhhh.
Thats cool Spankle, 3D is awesome , im sure you'll love it. As for the rout i took to model it, it was all done in poly's. i 1st boxed out the cr, then cut it up in the respective parts, the subdivided and sculpted. Thats how i go about my models. I have never used nurbs or sub-D's for the modeling of my cars. Other things like faces, and body's i may use Nurbs, since you can get very organic Meshes with ease. but i only use it as a base, then convert to Poly's, and sculpt from there. Also use Zbrush to really add those small details.
So hopefully soon ill get to get back at the FD model, and finish it, ill post my progress here aswell
Thanks guys!
