audio install 79 RX7

I wasn't real sure what to do with the back of the 7. The plastic panels didn't suit me for speakers...so i riped it out and started from scratch. I wanted to keep the spair wheel and jack in place. I made a false floor from ply wood and then wondered...where am i going to put these speakers. MORE PLY. I started at the side windows and went to the edge of the spare wheel well. When i installed the speakers i realized that the sound was all wrong. So i enclosed the speaker front panel all the way to the body. Filled every crack and hole with expandable foam and sealed the hole lot to the floor with white silicon sealent. It made a huge difference!! Now it had just a bit too much bass. So i tried sound deadener and a port on each side. I wish i had of done it in fiber glass for the smooth rounded look...but this was CHEAP. Next step will be rplacing the 8 in subs.

Audio is: Boss 1000w amp, fusion 6x9, Reactor 8 in subs. I've got a fusion 12 in sub in an enclosure, but it fills up the whole rear and when looking through the back window, the sub is basicly all you can see. So it looks like the spair wheel will go ,and i'll sink the sub into the rear floor area.
Up front is a set of fusion splits and a kenwood 250w amp. Head unit is pioneer.
It'll all be fusion soon, so it's all the same and easier to match.
pioneer deck $ 168.00
fusion 12' sub with enclosure $ 99.00
kenwood amp $ 45.00 (second hand)
2x 8' subs $ 20.00 on sale
boss amp $ 89.00
fusion splits $ 90.00
aerpro amp wiring kit x2 $ 90.00
1 sheet 2400x1200 5ply $ 25.00
1 packet of wood screws $ 1.98
tube of sicaflex ?
can of expandable foam ?
carpet $ 35.00
Staples ?
electical joiners ?
$662.98 damn!! Didn't know it cost me that much!! I bought most of the audio gear over a 1 year period, so i guess i didn't miss it that much.

tools:
Jigsaw, wood rasp and file, palm sander, circular saw, drill,
screw driver, stapler, caulking gun, muti meter, wire strippers/joiner
tape mesure.
Wow...you never realise what you've done sometimes until you write it out.
sounds lik alot of hard work!! hehehe....

Looks nice and tidy mate!

I'm just starting the install on my S3 and have a pair of the old Orion DVC 400W 8 inch subs that i'm thinking of putting in ported enclosures as well.

Do you get much overall bass from the 8 inch subs you have used? I also have a 12 inch sub in a box, so I may just use that and not waste my time on the 8's.

Any opinions/experiences with the 8's Vs 12's???

G'day Cam...thanks for the kind words! 8's vs 12's..no contest. But the 8's do have some good bass. Better than 6x9's but they don't have the punch of a bigger subs. I'm running the rear channel of the amp at 2 ohms and i have the subs bridged. I've got the bass boost turned off on the head deck, but on at the amp 1/2. (3 settings on this amp for boost) For driving to work, the people on the footpath can still hear the 8's...but if i add the 12' people actually spin around and say what the?? I haven't tried it , but from what i've read, 2 10' would be better than 2 8's or better than 1 12'. The 12' sub sounds awesome. I'm allmost tempted to leave the 8's and sink the 12 into the floor. Everyones different...but i'd definately go the 12. Experiment first and make it a permanent fixture in the car last. I had alot of fun....but it took me 4 goes and 3 different placeings before i was happy. Good luck with your install ,and post some pics when your done.
Cheers,
Roy.

Hey Roy,

yeah i figured the 8's would lose...der!

I'm probably gonna just use the 12 for now but I really want to see how the Orions would go as they are duel voice coil units and rated at 400Wrms! They have huge magnets on them and look really solid so if they were pushed with enough amplifier i think they would be interesting. I think they were quite expensive subs back in their day.

The other problem I have, is I have the Mariah Motorsports rear hatch fitted to my S3 so I have VERY limited space to work with, as I don't want the subs firing directly up into the fibregass hatch and making it rattle to the shithouse...

I'll definately post some pics up when i'm done, probably gonna be a few months though as i'm hell busy at the moment...
