I meant to say that my computer has a female side...
Anyways, my computer side looks just like both sides of the cables you guys are showing. And I'm pretty sure that's a serial port connector. I'll post a picture when I get home today of it to make sure.

Just get a usb to serial adapter.

If you are running vista, you might want to make sure the one you pick specifically says it works with vista.

Ok so I got it to work... On a win xp OS with null modem adapter and a serial yo USB cable. Everything work just fine EXCEPT that I get a memory access error when I try to view my saved maps

The Firestarter
i tried it today also, with the different emulator, here my my impressions.
Not much has changed since the last time i tried it. While Palm OS 4.0+ emulator works slightly better than garnet Palm OS especially during communication. The major issue that the emulators had difficulty with was Memory storage from external syncs. The idea was to connect the PC just as you would with the Palm link to the serial cable to rtekECU. Connecting with the ECU from the PC is a breeze, It will always work. When you connect, normally all your values stored into your ECU automatically show on your Palm. However in the case of this emulator scenario, it doesn't always do that. Your saved maps arn't always displayed.
Again this is a problem with the emulators ability to cache information i suppose. I never really was good at figuring out why Garnet was not saving or loading my maps at all even though it would say it was saved. The OS emulator used in this thread seem to have had better luck..But its still too unstable for my taste.
While its not 100%, it was a good step in the right direction from my last attempt awhile back using Garnet.
If anyone is interested and is savy at programing, i have an open source java program that i started that i tried to program that was initialy made to connect to NISTUNE chipped ecus. But eventually i wanted to have it able to connect to Rtek. If anyone is interested in volunteering a helping hand with the programing id appreciate it. I was going to finish it and hand it over to turbo2ltr to review as a java alternative to palm.
BTW i hate the bit rate and sampling rate of the stock ECU.

You want to grab the [rx7]maps.pdb or (something like that?) and drag it into the programs to add it to the emu's memory. if you dont have a palm at all, then you would need to perform a "hotsync" with the emulator.
or did you save a map with the emulator and then it won't let you load it? make sure the boost based timing check box didnt magicly uncheck itself, before you load the new map, otherwise you may get a table mismatch error.

you have to go to your hotsync'd back up folder(like c:/program files/handspring/"username"/backup/

1. EITHER multiple edits(like your web based experiment) OR being able to type the numbers.
2. full view exporting, for sharing and such.
3. color! and maybe a rotatable 3d viewing mode?
4. maybe being able to overlay 3d maps on top of each other and view like a before and after.
5. here's the killer, out of car tuning, like tune i... save it, and upload it to the car later.
i'm sure someone has better ideas then i?
one more neat one... being able to load half a map from one save, and half from another, almost like drag a dropping between maps, or just selecting a range and moving it say, down 1 line.

ok im the dumbdumb from the other thread..
i cant get the ''palm'' to connect to the ecu always shows [X]
from my ecu-null-serial-usb-laptop
tried running it on my virtual machine XP and on my vista and cant get it to work..
did i miss something
i was using for my REAL palm:
ecu-null-hotsync cable
any chance at an idiot proof (me) lol step by step write up?

ok i found one of my problems,
didnt have the null attached.
heres how i have everything now.
ecu-cable from ecu-gender changer-null-serial-usb-laptop
software is set on ''attached to serial port''
and thats it. everything else softwarewire is set to how it was when i downloaded the program
