Inner axle cup recommendations
1 Attachment(s)
So yet another trip to the track has ended in carnage, this time the driver’s side inner axle cup decided to fail. I had replaced the passenger’s side last year after it broke the night before pinks. I’m guessing the best avenue would be to get some new ones from ray, then have them cryo treated. Just wondering if there’s a better option…. Aside from ErnieT brand axles for 1900$, I’m only making 465rwhp but I’m wondering if it makes more sense to start saving now and fix it right for the last time, just hard to swallow a 2k fix. Would heat treating be better than cryo since cryo typically better for wear applications?
Thanks for any insight. I should known after tec failed me for having 2 mo expired seatbelts I should have called it a night. https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1226526448 |
Does that axle damage take out the clutch type diff as well?
Cryo treating should reduce residual stresses, reduce slip planes, and some other grain structure imperfections which improve toughness and fatigue properties. By how much is under much debate without A/B testing. |
Mine keep breaking also. They lasted all season on 30psi@500+ hp but on 35psi around 600HP they are just snapping. Last 2 events were a waste of time. I think I'm just going to get the new setup like Ernies.
The price on their website is $2000. Shop price is $1700. Anthony |

The both times I have first removed the broken outer axle, then used a strong magnet pickup tool to get out any chards, chunks of metal.(like 10 passes till it comes out clean 3-4 times Then taping the broken stub through from the other side. Another pass with the magnet from the other side Drain and fill the diff. Are your tearing down the diff? just wondering if I’m short cutting anything |

Mr. Bacon...:)
This is money well worth spent. I have been cutting low 1.4 60's with no ill effects. Actually when Anthony was helping me out Sunday I managed a 1.40 which is my best yet. I broke those things every damn week prior to the DSS upgrade. Then the output shaft every 3 passes, lol. Now thats all fixed too :D |
Great news Ernie, I'm glad I picked up this DSS upgrade. Although the DSS told me the stock ABS gears would fit the new halfshafts (outer cups) but they clearly will not fit. I plan to keep the ABS so I'll have some adaptors machined to mount the stock ABS gears onto the outer CV cups.
|
The only real alternative you have to the Ernie axles would be to run a little higher pressure in the tires so they spin just a tad to take a load off the axles. The only thing with that is your 60ft times are not going to be as good. Like Ernie said, if you plan on racing alot, it's better to spend the money on the good axles because in the long run you end up spending just as much and have alot of headaches. I just laid down over 2500 bucks on a 9" for my rx2 when I paid 2000 dollars for the car, but I know I won't be breaking any rearend parts any time soon. :)

If I start saving now ill own them by the spring. LOL. Then the tail shafts will be my next i$$ue I need to get my plumbers license and come work for you congrats on the 1.40 thats awesome, glad you finally got the bugs out |
Get the DSS axles.. I got them in my car, there slightly different then ernies since i'm using a different rear but nonetheless there the same otherwise..
Look at the expensive of going to track and always breaking your axles when you figure the price of the DSS and the amount of time/headaches saved.. |

Anthony did you every cryo treat the inner axle stubs.
if so how long did they last? |

That's very possible and have been done using 300m but it's still very limited to the stock dimensions which really is the problem. Even with the stronger shaft what's going to stop gear breakage in the tranny. You will be only moving up the chain to the next weak link and wasting $$$$ in the process like others have done before. Just give in and do it right in the first place like some record holders have been doing as of late.

wow Eh Is that supra axles or custom after market ford axles?
How hard would it be to fit aftermarket brakes with a kit like that onto a FC or FD or can you machine the FC/FD hub to fit 31 spline ? Eeek any chassis shops here in Florida can handle a job like that? Dutchman has a 9" center housing/CV only kit.(no 3rd) Guess I could fab up the rest myself hmmmmmmmmmmmm |
ajaajajajaj all this confusion driving me crazy

we snapped those axles twice oh man that got us pissed

I agree the FD transmission is a weak point. I guess since most of the issues I see are with those making much more hp than my self, and since my freshly rebuilt and cryo’d tranny made it 1.5 passes ( 1 soft run and a burnout) before the tail shaft snapped I figure I might aw well rebuild it since I picked up a main shaft a few months ago. My tail shaft snapped when it appears the tranny appeared to move (now have transmission brace right below the tail shaft) you can see the Candy Cane-ing in the pic https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1227121422 Who produced, had one made? I never saw anyone with one. How much? I realize its all just a means to a end, the axles are a no-brainer so they will be in by the spring season begins, coming up with 4500 to get a gforce is a whole nother issue. But if I could get the tranny to last a whole season on my little 465hp, then next winter go g force it might be easier to budget. Would the case flex be that bad? Thanks for any info Len |

Yes You Can...
And i have one for sale if anyone's interested.. I have the adapter plate and stock T5 Tranny.. All you need to buy is the gforce gearset... i believe they sell it somewhere around $1700 |
Is there a company that makes the adapter plate or are all those custom, 1-off?
|
My FD is strictly Drag, just a cage, Aluminum Dash, Switch panel. I’m way light in the HP category, but I’m not trying to break any records :D , just love racing

good info here.

Actually, great info in here!!
Cris, whats the most power would you put on one of the g-force T5? What other mods do you have to do to get this thing to work? Can you supply this setup? |

oh man, thanks. I'm gonna jump all over this :)

Ah yes, i remember why i didn't look any further into this. I don't think i could deal with that shifter location.
|
What Nissan's did that T5 come in?

Well, for now it is, since i don't break too much and i'm still trying to keep it a "street car." We'll see how long that lasts.

G-force got the entire package for a rotary. It comes with an adapter for the T2 bellhousing. Also for an FD the shifter placement is way too forward but there are ways around that. A couple of certain factory applications place the shifter rearward for an easier fit. It's just a matter of swapping tail housings.
So G force has a kit for the FD? Or they just have shafts for the T5 that match up with the rotary? How come Ernie spent 4600 on his (dub question, I know he has a money tree in his backyard) I think I’m looking for a turn-key solution, I always suck piecing stuff together, I spend to much, and always finish last LOL Thanks |

Shifter location is same as stock on my G101, just 2" to the left. Not a big deal at all though. |
I replaced my broken axle yesterday in my cold ass garage. I decided to take her out for a spin at a local hang out spot but the rear was making noise, it had a LOUD whining. Today I drove to my friends shop and took everything apart. Turns out the pinion gear has a chip in it. Maybe a piece of the axle fell in, I'm not sure.
Either way I am ordering my new axles, the ErnieT special from http://www.Enzo-Racing.com in Long Island. He knows the guys from Driveshaftshop pretty well so if you guys need a set, get them from him. I also sold my current axles (the entire assembly) for $500 to offset the cost a bit. Anthony |
