Question Will this solve my problem?

Hey, I got an 88 GXL not too long ago and the shifter is really loose in it. Ive never felt this before. It just has lots of play to it, even while in gear! I can get it in gear fine, but once in there is a really good amount of play to the left, right and any other direction.
Is this a problem with my transmission, gear box, or shifter?
And anyone know how to fix this problem? Would getting a short throw kit solve this? Yah know, kill too birds with one stone!
Thanks for any help!
