There were 3 options Mazda considered when the FC project began.

1. 12A 6PI
2. 13B DEI
3. 13B with forced inductinon

Obviously the 12A was dropped (due to lack of power).

In 1988 Mazda did test a prototype 20B N/A RX-7 as a possible alternative to the TII. Obviously, this didn't make it either. I'm not quite sure why, but probably due to MPG concern.

Although Mazda did, at one point, consider the 20B, it was not originally planned. The FC was never slated to get the 20B.

I suspect cost or maybe even bravery is more likely. With high compression rotors and the rotary engine's relative lack of mechanical friction a N/A 20B would probably get the same mileage as a turbo II or maybe even better.

The FC, especially in its early stages, was a good selling, reliable car. I'm not sure Mazda would have wanted to pull the trigger on putting in what amounted to a totally experimental engine in it.

read the book, , Sports Car colour history; Mazda Rx7. It gives specific reasoning (belive it or not) for not using a 3 rotor. It also features parts of an article published around 88-89 where auto journalists are given the opertunity to take a 3 rotor car for a test and article, (don't remember if turbo or not, or if it was a 20B or the previous 3 rotor). There are statments made by mazda execs to the effect of a 3 rotor being available in the current platyform (at that time FC) in 1-2 years. That seems to indicate that they at least seriously considered offering the 20B in the RX7. There is also a somewhat detailed explanation of why it wasn't used for the FD which is either unbeleiveable or somewhat illogical, (my own thoughts), which as I stated eariler was due to weight concerns.

Mazda should have manned up and offered the FD with a 3 rotor, with alluminum side housings and no turbo's. Probably would have ended up being lighter than the 13B-REW and at least as powerful.

That would of cost more. They already had enough trouble selling them due to price.

It also sates that at the time of the FD development many engines where considere including the 20b but mazda people though it was not necesary because the 13b-rew had only 25 hp less and was a lot lightter

apparently they never heard of modifying your car or tuning potential.
