Water/Meth ONLY
 
Current setup is BW EFR 8374@16psi with modified Greddy intercooler kit and devil's own water/meth kit n an FC. Engine is large ported S4 13B with S5 rotors and thicc S5 rear iron, turblown stud kit.

414whp put down at Lucky7 in SoCal

Q: Engine Masters just released a video showing water/meth ONLY cools as good if not better than intercooler ONLY. Has anyone ever ran water/meth only on their street/light track car? I would love to get rid of the intercooler kit and just leave my water/meth kit in place, but am curious if anyone else has tried this on their rotary?

My daily driver car (95 3000gt Vr4) is water/meth only. Very small twin turbos in a tightly packed engine bay that is known for running hot. I also Live is Sunny Florida, pump gas. Not E85.

I know it's not an Rx7, but I have ran this way for a while. If you are cruising around in vacuum, as you will most likely be. Then there is no need for an intercooler to cool the air, since it is not being compressed and creating heat.

I do advise running E85 as your fuel source as an aided benefit/safety measure. But it's not a "must have" thing.

its been done, and it doesn't work.

i forget the guys name, but there is a fun thread in i think the single turbo section (or maybe here?), basically if you're out of boost its fine, if you're WOT its fine, but if you're like 1-2psi (think going up a hill) it is not fine and the car blows up.

Hmm yeah that's a good point, my AUX injection is set to spray at 6psi+ - makes me wonder if I make the spray map very progressive and to start spraying at 1psi I can get away with it? But yeah right now in it's current state I would not be able to do it.

Although thinking about it that seems a little far fetched, mainly because there are plenty of cars out there running less than 7psi without any intercooler/AUX injection at all and they seem to be fine?

I start spraying at 6psi as well, pre-turbo with small injectors. My car is twin turbo so there are 2 small injectors spraying at this time My system is not currently progressive. But at 10 psi another injector starts spraying about 6" before the TB (post Turbo, Pre-Throttle body). Then at 14 psi, another turns on that is placed in a similar location not to far from the TB.

This was with a 50/50 mix of Meth and water.

It works awesome and is very basic.

Hh yeah... nitrous guys also use AUX injection to run on pump gas. So you do NOT need forced air/boost to correctly atomize your choice of chemical cooling. You do NEED a very good atomizing sprayer and adequate pump to inject at a lower boost. Also placement, pre vs. post all play a roll here. Done right it beats the intercooler set up every time for MANY reasons. Done wrong... You prove people right that say your going to destroy your engine.

its not far fetched, it happened. if i find the thread i will link it, its the usual old Rx7 club cluster-f, of stupid claims, and secret engine rebuilds, and all of that nonsense.

basically though, the intercooler is a simple device that works, and you are considering replacing it with something more complex, and you are adding a point of failure, so that needs to be a consideration. when your AI fails, will the engine survive?

ive been looking through some old threads, and cars that are simple are the ones that end up working best. i'll like a couple of 500+hp dynos on straight pump gas

There was another member that did it, but I cant remember his name. He had a FD, which I believe it was tuned by "Turbosource", he blew his engine but it was due to a a nipple/hose blowing off from the wastegate, and the engine overboosted.

Cosmo Kramer, there was a midnight rebuild of the engine in there somewhere, then he went v8....

not saying you can't make it work with no IC, its just more complex, and therefore more prone to failure.

Yup, that was the one!

Agree, it could work, but all ts needs to be crossed, and i dotted; and on top of that, you will still be capped at a HP/boost level (unless you go E85), and your setup should have automatic engine protection based on boost/iat/etc. IMO, its easier to run a quality/efficient intercooler...

Now that is a flash back :)

Steven Kahn tuned that one, and it did well on the dyno from what I recall. Later down the line one of the boost reference nipples wiggled loose on the tial wastegate, and went to like 30 psi( it was only tuned for 1 bar).

Even with a modern FI that has many failsafes( lean out protection, overboost, etc) its still not worth it. Even a water to air intercooler would be better( in the event you are trying to not block radiator airflow as we did on Kramer's car).
