Rotary Aviation apex seal report
Has anybody tried using rotary performance seals? How do they hold up in comparison?
they have 2mm race spring and 2mm street springs. theirs no info on there site about them other then that so i thought i would ask you guys.

Theres no information regarding the manufacture of those rotary performance seals. Id bet theyre somethink like atkins/ra seals sold under another name.
I assembled my new engine tuesday night (1 week rebuild
) so soon enough will find out if the housings are worn enough to affect compression.
I kept sideseal clearances much tighter this time between 0.0015 - 0.0025".
Just waiting on my clutch to come back then im ready to go.

Nah man, thats the same rotor housing (rear) as pictured a few pages back.
Also someone was mentioning the surface finish of RA vs OEM apex seals.
Well i cant recall what the RA ones were like I think they were smooth/shiny.
The rx5 3mm OEM seals ive used in this build were a rough finish.
I would assume a rough finish will bed in sooner than a polished finish.

Cause of engine failure has been identified.
I had marked the crank pulley wrong, we had 15 deg advance more than what we thought.
I guess that explains the carnage......
Suprising that it went almost all day being thrashed as hard as it was.
Maybe when I remark the crank & reset base timing I can saftely add 5-10 deg more advance.

interesting... i like seeing new products, although i don't know if anything can match stock for longevity and power, or ceramics for detonation resistance...
i'd like to see tighter tolerances in the motor so the apex seal would be a little bit more shrouded from the combustion...that wouldn't cure anything, but may give a little window for you to back off if you start detonating...maybe

im curious because... the new housings have a coating to break in the seals faster, so its abrasive, i wonder if the abrasive nature of that coating smoothens out and keep the housings safe from further wear
FYI RA did recommend new housings for a faster break-in with their seals. I think there are maybe some pics posted on Nopistons showing the condition of a new housing after tear down with these seals.
Ok here are some pics of an engine that was recently torn down with RA seals. The housings were used prior to the rebuild and had 85k on them. The engine lasted 15k after the rebuild and was damaged possibly due to lubrication problems.

So do we know what the cause of the failure was? Did it spin a bearing, did it run out of oil???
The housings look good from what i can see but how was it driven & tuned?
I would expect the housings to look good if it had tame timing & was driven by a granny.
I will be impressed if it was tuned on the edge & driven hard.
