Question question regarding porting

thinking about buying my brother's 88FC and i want to port it...it's a turboII.

what kind of power gains can be expected from bridgeporting the motor? what about street porting?

is it good to have a bridgeport rotary as a daily driver???like, is it bareable to live with it...won't it lose low end torque?

just wondering if any of you could help me out here...thanks

Well normaly the most you can port a turbo engine is a street port because of the high overlap, although there have been people who run a half Bridge where only one side housing of each rotor is very mildly bridge ported. Bridge ports a on the lumpyer side of idling andnot whole lot of performance till higher RPMs with a turbo the low end torque will be better. But if you are worryed about drivablity then get a street port. The Hp gains are entirly dependant on how big a port and how much boost.

thanks for the help

hey thanks, i needed that cleared up...too bad you're the only one who replied..i could use more input...like is it difficult to port a motor? or would it be a better idea to get someone with experience to do it? im really itchin' to work on my car myself though.

bridge porting the motor isn't all that difficult or costly, its what else is needed to accompany it that is. With a bridge port you can kiss good bye to the factory ecu, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, exhuast manifold and a number of other things

you'll be needing a stand alone efi system
T04 or similar sized turbo
2 x 1200cc or 4 x 800 injectors - or larger
a fuel pump capable of supplying 500Hp worth of fuel at 60psi
a external wastegate
a new exhuast manifold to suit the new turbo

realistically you should get a bigger higher flowing intercooler too

There's a whole kettle of fish to it, alot more than first meets the eye so to speak

HWO hits nail on head...
I'll add that the porting task is not small. street ports are not too difficult with a good template (like RacingBeats'), bridgeporting is time-consuming and tedious. You'll want to consider opening up the exhaust ports if you're opening up the intake... Also, depending on the general condition of the internals, that '88 motor is gonna want some new pieces. The regular springs, seals, gasgets, oil pump drive chain, etc are regular rebuild items. You should also up the oil pressure, and decide if hardened stationary gears, and some modified oil jets are worthwhile.

One other thing, remember that you're taking the stock '88 TII RWHP from 152 to near 400 - that a 260% increase. You will want to make sure you can turn and stop that sled! (shocks, springs, wheels, tires, BRAKES:o
Then there's the safety equipment... but that's another post.

One thing to keep in mind though is that the exhaust does get louder with porting.
