Ordering a Tremec TKO 600, few questions.

I'm going to dump my stock POS transmission and order a Tremec TKO 600 this week. I need to know if someone makes an adapter for RPM and Speed sensors? If not, what are you guys with upgraded transmissions doing?

check with autoillusions
on the 20B section
he put a Tremec TKO
and had a special spacer/adapter made
that puts the shifter in the stock location

Hey Lupe.
Give G-force transmissions a call before you purchase the Tremec. Mike Long from G-force have been doing some pretty nice work with the T-5 and T-56 transmissions lately. That Tremec in stock form sucks with high rpm shifts.

Do you know of anyone who manufacturers the bell housing for the T-56 for rotarys?

For around $2100 you can get the T5 dog ringed transmission http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_t-5_price.asp Hey Crispeed do you know anyone who has used the GForce T5's on a rotary?

Even at that, autoillusions said he paid like 1300 for that big spacer he had made. What the hell is that spacer needed for? Is that tremec that much shorter than the stock tranni? He also said that I needed to have a custom input shaft made

Sounds like a 8G project to me.

Mike long at Gforce has the adaptor for the T5 ($250 i think) if not u can get it from Kennedy Engineering....Mike also has a 20b 3rd gen built by Abel that uses a T56 so im sure he can get u the adaptor for that also... im gonna run the GF T5 behind my 20b soon, its alot less than a guru dog box and theres alot of gear ratio options...

Did they have to use a spacer like auto illusions did? He had to use an extended input shaft which scares me, that thing looks like it would twist in half.

This is "auto illusions"

here are a few pics from etown....i know abel has used a few of these GF T5's with great results....guys have been running t5's on rotarys for a long time but the gear ratios that came with the mustang didnt work well with the 13b's...another problem was that the t5 couldnt handle the revs of a rotary....GF has fix all of those problems and Mike knows what ratio will work well with both 13b's and 20b's.... the GF T5 is what im going to use in my 20b 1stgen...

call gforce or Email them.....the tranny with adapter will run under $3k, it all depends on what tranny options u want....a used mustang T5 is easy to get and it shouldnt cost u more than $100, because u only need it for the case...

I emailed G-Force about the upgraded T5. I also emailed them again about upgrading my stock tranni with G-Force internals. We'll see what happens.

I am thinking about replacing the stock transmission with either a T56 or a TKO 600. Those of you that said the T5 doesn't work well at high rpm, are you referring to the TKO series or the original T5 stuff? There is a world of difference between the two.

I am leaning toward the T56 since I would like to add a 6th gear to keep the fuel mileage in check on road trips. If there are enough people interested we might be able to put together a group buy on bell housing adaptors . . .

Ive talked with G force and liberty and they both tell me that the t5 TKO and T56 dont like to shift above 6500 rpm's. I dont think anyone has the perfect trany for our application. Liberty Recomended face plating the 2nd/3rd gear in either the t5 or tko.
You will have to have a custom clutch made by tilton or someone as the splines of the input shaft are different. Only way of getting around the 6500 shifts is going a dog box and that sucks to street drive.

I just got off the phone with G-force. They recommend that I use a viper T56 with upgraded triple cone syncros ($5,700) and a gm bell housing and adaptor ($1,200!). They said it should shift above 7,500 rpms, but they're not sure. They said the stock T56 won't work well at high rpm because it has a double/single syncros instead of triple/double. They don't think the TKO setup is well suited for high rpm applications because it has 3 shafts, truck based gears (large diameter with small teeth) and brass syncros.

Now I know why there aren't more rx7 running around with non-factory gearboxes . . .

After I had talked with them there didnt seem to be to many good options for us. I could talk to liberty and find out if a decent gear set could be built for or cars. I know acosta has them building there gear sets but they are also a dog box style trany maybe pro shifted or faced gears I dont know.

i too am deeply interested in this as i am intending on a finished product around 800hp (on race gas & high boost) 500ish for the typical weekend driving. plus the extra torque from my 20b forces me to consider tranny upgrades.

i looked at the supra getrag, but the gearing sucks, the final gear is shorter than the 3rd gens final gear. if anyone finds a good streetable solution, i'm in for a group buy or whatever to get it rolling.

I just emailed craig the owner of liberty as he is the one who does there design work. We will see if his interested in taking on this project. With talks with Liberty it looks like there could be a solution that will still retain the syncros while maintaining a decent price. I will keep you guys informed on the info I receive from liberty. Acostas gear set is non syncro faced gear. It is streetable but will require some practice on street driving. So if anyone wants a more drag style setup thats driveable on the street you may want to contact them.

I spoke to Paul at Liberty this morning. He said the same thing that G-force did -forget about using an off the rack T56 or a TKO. The cheap solution is to face plate the gears. The expensive and better solution is the G-force setup which has double and triple syncros.

Ari and I have been in talks with Paul @ Liberty transmissions to make new internals for the stock casing (straight cut gears) @ a $4k price tag, still a bit high for me.

Acosta already has that built by liberty for them. I want something that allows me to retain the syncros. Unless your talking about keeping the syncros with straight cut gears. The problem seems to be time to design the project.

i don't know what you guys are planning in your talks with the designers of these trannies, but I for one would really like a ridiculously tall 6th gear because I plan on many a road trip and some reasonable mileage would be nice (I know reasonable is definitely subjective here since we're dealing with rotaries)

keep us informed on the outcomes of your talks guys. thanks for taking the innitiative
