installed magnaflow cat now its smoking

have a 87 N/A auto with 2.5 exahust pipes all the way back going to one muffler. have one precat left in the down pipe and installed a magnaflow high flow cat today.

ok so i installed a new magnalfow high flo w cat with 2.5 pipes in and out. i have one pre cat left the one on the down pipe. installed this high flow cat that was ment to be for a v8. it has the air inlet pipe too and i reconnected it using silicone hose. when i had hte holse exhaust down to weld the cat in place i also sprayed the holse thing down with paint that will hold up to 1200 degrees to slow down rusting . i test drove the thing making sure its all goood. floored and the EGT gauge showed 1600+ degrees. is that normal going about 60 --70 at full throttle? i turned the car of after letting it sit for about 10 sec at idle and then looking underneatht. i saw smoke coming from the cat. now my question is , did i melt the insides? hopefully not. it stopped after about 20 sec at looking at it.

few more qustions.
1) will the paint catch on fire if it gets to hot?or will it just come off ?

2) will the cat catch on fire if it gets to hot and will that spread?

please let me know casue i dont want my car to burn up. or me

New aftermarket cats will smoke the first couple of times you drive the car. Nothing to worry about!
