I would yank a head off a mower and do the combustion chamber. That would be simple enough.

Heck I got a couple of horizontal shaft motors in the storage building. I think that pulling the head, bead blasting it and putting a coat on and running it a few hours after it cures a couple of days should answer the questions I have.
I expect it to burn away quickly close to the exhaust valve and work it's way accross until the entire couting is gone.
The amount of time it takes is what I am wondering. Just morbid curiousity drives me to test it.
I am much more curious as to how the stuff would work on a turbo but that is not as easy a test bed to setup.

Are you going to wrecking yards? You know I am talking about metal scrapyards right? The only cars they get are put in the crusher. Hell we have 7 or 8 just in Ft. Worth. Any of them on any given day may have something. Some of the metal yards don't even take cars

Damn nice score! You must be doing something right in your life, or you made a pact with the Would the ceramic hold up on a header? Inside of the pipe?

 

It will hold up on a header, but it is sprayed on the outside of the pipe. The spray has to be applied almost straight against a surfcae or it will not have any bond strength. The ceramic spray on the outside still creates a thermal barrier which is the only thing you are trying to accomplish. Well that and it acts as a rust barrier. The inside of the header gets enough carbon and even the slightest oil residue solves the internal rust problem.

 

Okay I got more info today. I can get ceramic powder starting at about $25 per lb. in 5 lb. minimums.

The sales rep is looking into more things I can run though this gun. They refer to this gun as "combustable spray" BTW so all powderd have to be supported by that process in case some of you are taking notes

 

Even better. The rep emailed me a price list and they have a ceramic that is about $8 per lb! The specs on it looked better suited than the $25 stuff at least for headers, turbo housings etc.

Cool, when you gonna start spraying headers for us? Make some $ man! Also, I dont know if this is useful or not, but you can flame spray aluminum too. That was common on airplanes for ADF antennas (still is actually). They flame sprayed a fiberglass fairing and it was the antenna.

 

It won't be long before the local guys descend on me to get theirs done It is just a matter of who gets me something here first. Probably Brian Cain or one of his faithful followers. Hell they are all running my solid motor mounts

Maybe tomorrow. It's a minimum 5lbs. so it it not much $. But I have to check Ms. Scalli because I also have to pick some stuff up from my machinist this week that may already have my funds for the week stretched.

You bet Ms. Scalli is the accountant. That ain't an easy job with me around. I have thrown out about $1000 in the last 10 days once I pay the machinist. Beween bearings, shafts, bolts, steel, powder for the powder coat machine, a couple of big drill bits and taps.
Hell just my Ebay account in the last 30 days was $340 before shipping on 15 items
So there does come a point where a $40 request gets me knocked upside the head
All this is still on the heels of me restoring the AE also. Fortunately I make a little extra on the side

ok the ceramic coating thing is a definite money maker....i'll tell u that for sure....the mandrel bender will be a big thing too.....the powder coating can make u money too.....now if i lived in texas....i'd get u customers....why don't u powder coat stuff for people.....i'm sure there will be tons of honda people wanting their calipers and valve covers and stuff like that done!

btw does the cermic bond to a layer of the same kind of ceramic well?
