Toluene is a key ingredient in race gas and it's been discussed many times before. Using E85 will require that you richen the mixture, as it's less energy dense than gasoline.

I've ocationally played with mixing a little E85 in the tank on my pickup truck and have been happy with the results. The engine in it is currently stock though so I don't know how well it did as an octane booster but with the engine having over 210k miles on it and the carb stuck in limp mode it absolutely loved having 2-3 gallons of "E85" added to the tank. Anything more than 3 gallons in a 12 gallon tank and the truck would have a hard time starting and running until the engine warmed up. I can't really say what the exact mixture of ethanol was because the amount of ethanol in E85 fluctuates depending on the time of year, elevation, etc...

Oh, I also had to insist to the gas station clerk that I work in the auto industry and knew more about what I was doing than she did because my truck was "too old to be E85 compatable" lol.
