Question External fuel pump?

I am going to fit an External fuel pump to my Turbo 2, what I would like to know is can I adapt the stock intank pump cradle to work as the tank pick up?

I am thinking along these lines as I am not into Welding tanks (even if they are purged first) and would like to keep it simple.

I've been thinking along the lines of removing the stock pump and fitting a pipe to act as a pick up, this sounds good but I would have to get the distance off the bottom of the tank quite good as too keep the Fuel level sender accurate.

Has anyone done this?

Chris,
I sumped my fuel tank with no problems what so ever, but I do know of a lot of people using the stock pump to fill a surge tank to feed the external pump. Its a pretty simple thing to do, and I would guess you could even use a float type device in the surge tank to operate a microswitch to turn the stock pump off and on to maintain fuel level. Search for surge tank, and I think you can find all the information you need. I was just wanting to simplify my fuel system so I opted for the sump.
