Do carb'd turbo setups need a Plenum?

My friend is converting his 12A to turbo using his dellorto.

he does'nt want to use a box like this.

He want's to use a Y pipe like this, but not EFI.

Will this work fine for a street car using a carb?

Thank's

Luis
