Can you tell me more about what aluminum pipes you bought? The bottom one that comes from the turbo needs replacing on my ride and it looks like you have a good handle on the fitment issue.

The lower pipe in the M2 kit is EXACTLY the right length to fit between the airbox outlet and the turbo inlet. This makes it tough to attach the silicon hose to either end and still fit all three pieces into what is a very tight spot. The lower pipe didn't fit perfectly square to the inlet and outlet, but it was pretty close. You can't tighten the airbox in place until you have the hard pipes on. You can just see it in this picture.

Apex is rated higher. I like it. I don't like the HKS intake. It looks like a butt.

My lower intake hose sucked itself shut from having a dirty air filter, being too hot, or probably both. Instead of forking out big bucks for a metal one, I bought some Santoprene hose from McMaster-Carr and some hose clamps for less than $25. It lasted two hard years before I went single turbo and still looked fine when I took it out. I used the same kind of hose for my single turbo intake as well.

See the post on ScuderiaCiriani.com from Kevin Kelleher

It certainly isn't as nice as the M2 ones, but it is cheap and works fine.

The Pettit intake sucks ****! Cheezy as **** metal tubs that connects the air by pass valve/ charge relief valve/ and intake for the EGR does not fit with out bending the brackets. Sheet of sheet metal needs to be jamed in to the bay to separate the heat from radiator is cheep as **** and has a poor fit and how that there is no "air box" they send you a tube to try to dump the EGR in and when you back off the gas it makes a sound like a cow farting. I just installed ALOT om mods on my car and
BY FAR THE WORST QUALITY piece I have on the car, and the cheeziest workmanship I have seen anywhere at a premium price. There are alot of intakes that by far exceed the quality, engineering, and workmanship of this intake.

Crooked Willow.

Carbon fiber airbox with close out panel (color of your choice), 2 K&N filters, aluminum piping. Intake air comes from the front of the car next to the radiator. Comparable in function to the M2 box but less expensive.

Too bad they're not available right now...

Just some additional thoughts - for kicks

The ARC Intake kicks around the used parts posts a lot. An interresting intake that is the same size as the stock intake, and designed for use with the stock IC and x-over tube. Very open with two Stock sized K&N filters, and velicity stacks inside for the intake tubes. Will only work with narrow aftermarket ICs (not PFS, M2, etc.). Excellent build quality too.

PFS Intake - not very popular, due to source of air (shared with IC). An easy mod on this is to cut out the bottom and rivet in some shilding, and then you get a well manufactured and fairly good looking intake with the same source of air as the other champions. The added bonus is that both intakes share the same oversized oval K&N filter, so when you are only pulling air on the primary turbo you get much more filter area. That said, if I had to buy a new intake, I'd go with M2, or a used TriPoint....

I've got another post going to compare intakes by size, etc

It's the air box dimensions post.
If any of you have some of the intaskes that aren't measured yet take a couple minutes and do so, then everyone can compare the size, and manner of intake in one place.

Yea, sorry for the buildup then letdown. I wish Duane at CWC would startup production again on some of his stuff. Anyway, here's the website location for the intake:

you guys left out one very good intake on the list

RX7FASHION

Personally I think it's better than all the intakes listed ! Should equal M2's in performance but with added build quality

I have the Apex'i intake, and I love it. But, I'm concerned that as I get ready to upgrade my SMIC, I am limited due to space issues. The intake itself is top quality, looks very cool, and works great! I had my intake pipes and factory squeeze clips powdercoated, so it dressed up the engine bay a little. see link for pic:

Vintage Red Touring - Get that airpump outta there and you'll have lots of room to move those intakes around and fit the SMIC. I got mine to fit with the Greddy2 FMIC!

DIY works best with 13hp and plus it will cost less than $100 if you do it right. I'm waiting for my K&N's then I'll be off.

Where did you confirm 13 HP?

Just curious as there is little documentation on each intake for the FD. Additionally, since there are so many variations in other modifications (exhaust, etc.), it is difficult to say that an intake is worth X amount of horsepower without knowing the other mods.

I have run the old M2 and the Apex. The M2 had K&Ns in it. With the Apex, my boost is consistently higher than it was with the M2 (about 1/2 PSI), utilizing all the same settings (in my PFC) and with equal ambient conditions.

Aside from that, the turbo whine is more pronounced with the Apex (this is probably the case for most open filters)...for those of you that like to hear them spool.

How about Stock with K&N replacement filter?

My mechanic Dyno'd tested that compared to the M2 Intake and there wasn't much of a difference to the wheels.

IMHO, any aftermarket intake that draws hot air with a sponge filter is a complete waste of $$$$.

most intake are a waste of $$$$ that gets u in trouble if ur in CA)

We've left out another intake, the N-Tech cold air intake (www.n-tech.net). Bang for the buck, it's hard to beat and a better design than Pettit's. I've used that intake and the CWR intake. I feel the CWR is slightly restrictive with the lid on. I have a KnightSports CF vented hood and with the lid off, it's able to suck air from the vent. I may run a strip of foam around it. It's incredibly well-made and much stronger than the M2 CF box. You could stand on the CWR and it probably wouldn't break :-) The aluminum pipes are amazing, works of art. The pics on the CWR page are of my car btw.

BTW I used to use a crooked willow racing intake.
I really thought it was a POS intake.
The box was flimbsy and fit poorly. It dented my old hood because it was too big. Also the K&N's Duane sent me were to big and had to be smashed in to fit.
I hated it personaly. I thought the price was high for what it was.

PFS makes a nice hard cast plate and a thick hard fiberglass shroud.
Best I've seen for aftermarket "inclosed" intake.
