Anyone running a ford 9 inch rear on their Rx-7? If so how much would this cost to implement with suspension on a FD? Is it streetable?
I posted something liked this maybe a few months ago. I was or am going with a 12 bolt rear with say low 3 series gears. The 4:10 or 4:11 are way to high for an rx7 with a good amount of power. If anyone has changed their rear to a 12 bolt or 9 ' let me know some details, benefits, & problems associated. Thanks!!
Yes it's streetable if installed properly (the rear end is stock in many Mustangs on the street making plenty of power).
A good benefit of this year end is not only does it handle extremely high HP level, but there is almost any gear ratio you can desire easily available.
Plus you can always scavenge one from a junkyard to save money, but if you are making a high performance/quality project you might want to just buy new to ensure quality.
Also look into the Ford 8.8" rear end. It can handle almost as much power (many drag guys use this rear end with high power setups, even over 1000hp), plus it has even more gear ratio options available for it.
If you plan on having the car on the street and not drag only, obviously with the solid rear axle you are going to severly compromise your handling compared to the FD's nice independent rear suspension, but if you are planning on as serious HP numbers as it seems, then handling is probably not the most important aspect.

Just some more info ...
There are about a zillion different versions of the 9", and only 2 of them are a decent a rear end out of the box.. most of them have a pretty weak centre section, and are not that drag proof... Rear ends that taking a 1000hp etc are running with not only aftermarket axles but also aftermarket centre sections and bearing upgrades..
The toughest small diff right out of the box(or junk car), is the mopar 8 3/4... Standard equipment is 30 spline axles versus the 28 spline's of the 9", also standard , the 8 3/4 comes with same bearings from the factory, that ford sells as the daytona upgrade package for the 9", the dana lsd for the 8 3/4 is the better of the two available as the auburn unit isn't rebuildable.. So if you are looking just to score a diff, and take it to get if fitted or shortened without breaking the bank, thats the diff of choice... They can be found in most v-8 dusters, darts, cudas, chargers etc etc...avoid the very early versions, they have press fit drum brakes..
HP rating numbers from Car craft on rear ends mated behind v-8's used on the dragstrip..
9" ford: 400 hp
8.8 ford 300 hp
8 3/4 mopar 500 hp
dana 60 750 hp.
