Question Aluminum or Steel Flywheel???

This is for my 87 RX7 Turbo....sig below.

Any of you have an aluminum flywheel 9lb or 11lb on a daily driver??? I need to replace my entire clutch and I am down to chosing the flywheel. Is the 17lb steel a lot less performance for the dollar? If the aluminum is streetable I want to go with it...If it is a real pain to deal with or have to slip all the time I might go with the steel.

I will have an ACT HD with either an organic or the 6 puck copper. I also can get a semi-ceramic disc.........What is the best clutch-plate vs disc combo for a daily driver on the street, but still provides the best grip vs inertia improvement????

Tell me...Tell me

Re: Aluminum or Steel Flywheel???

If you plan on doing alot of drag racing then you would probably want to keep the stock flywheel. Otherwise go for the aluminum. I had a 9.5 lb. flywheel on my 87 T2 with alot of mods, and it was very good on the street, even in traffic.

The ACT organic disc is ok if you don't go past about 300-350 HP. After that you'll probably want the 6 puck disc. I'm using an ACT pressure plate, but I switched from an organic ACT disc to a Clutchnet 6 puck disc with springs. The springs make it a little more streetable, and it holds very well. The regular 6 puck can be a bit tricky.

Thumbs up Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the reply.....I know that heavier is better for street and strip, but I don't go to the dragstrip very much.....I will go every once in a while to test my mods, but not every week or anything. Most of my driving is highway and I will be trying autocross starting next Jan or so.....

I want the best acceleration for the dollar, but not at the expense of drivability. I drive the car 100 miles per day......some city, but mostly highway. I know the RB aluminum that John sells has a steel insert that can be replaced if worn. The only question I really have is......does the steel give any performance increase over the stock or should I get the light aluminum...

How much faster does the aluminum rotate vs the steel????

I have never had a light steel flywheel, just aluminum. I would say that if you're going to spend alot of money get the best performing one, which is the aluminum.
