FL 88 13B non-turbo Question

Is it necessary to have the air pump installed. In piston engines fewer pulleys mean more horses is this true for rotary's. What exactly is the purpose of an air pump anyway?

it's not necessary for function. the car will run fine without it. it is used for emissions control.
