6Spd Tranny for my Turbo II?

Does anybody know if they make or have a 6spd transmission for my 2nd Gen Turbo II that is better than the stock 5spd?

6-speed Supra JZA8 conversion - about $9k.
6-speed dog box, HKS - about $9k.
T56 conversion with adapter plate - about $5k.

Why you want 6 speeds for?&nbsp I find the stock transmission more than adequate, unless you're shooting for over 170mph?

1st gear is a little too short...the next three are almost perfect...I wish I could run an FD 5th gear to be able to hit 190mph at redline.

have a look at this site for an excellent gearset that goes inside the stock Turbo caseing!

No it is not 6spd, but with theis ratio set you can see why it is not!

I use one on my racer and my brother runs one in his FD Street/drag car!

For about 5K it is the best option as far as I am concerned!

2.38 1st gear? oh yeah, thats a race transmission if I've ever heard of one.
I wish 3rd was a little bigger (1.41, maby) on the Turbo II tranny.

Correct if you know anything about circuit racers, this ratio gives you close to 70mph in first and keeps you perfectly in the rpms range for the next gearshift throughout the entire rpm range. A bloddy quick takeoff with sh__ fast gear changes to follow.

If you want a mass produced undersized set of gears yes! 6.5K looks like the price to me, I have had one before and I know what i want, quality, strength, performance and reliability and that is not what you get from that set!

Twister, are you saying that you've previously owned the Quaife cogs and didn't like them? If so, what problems did you have?

Thanks for additional info.

Hi Yes,

I had problems with dog (teeth) wear, and gears wearing, and forks/rods bending/snapping. I just do not think the quality of the material or the thickness (of a 6spd) is strong enough for high hp cars inside a 'standard' case. that is why I have gone for superior 5spd solution. The ratios also are not the best, look at the gaps in the 5th and 6th etc.

Here is a picture of the kit I now have and think it is fantatsic, I never plan to be looking backwards now except at the opposition!

Here is the way I see it...
Spend $9000 (about) on 6spd transmission.
or
Spend $9000 on engine and other mods.

I wonder which car would win!!!

To win in all events you need the all round package, spend 9k on an engine and when the tranny goes bang or you cannot stay in your optimun rpm range what happens then?

Anyway as I say, spend what you can on all aspects for the best end result.

How many winning cars do you see wit only a good engine, or only a good brake, or suspension, or transmission etc etc etc

Yes, I have a Turbo II box in my Gen 1 racer with this gearset in.

My brother has a Gen 3 with the 'street' greatset in which he also raves about, both from Guru Motorsports.

I paid about 10K AUD a little while ago, I have just looked on their website looks like about 5.5K USD for a Gen 3 and 5K for a Gen 1 gearset. The difference it has made to my racer is the best money I have ever spent I can tell you, it is from Guru Racing from Melbourne, but I know they sell them into the UK and I I guess the US as well. Here is their web site, drop them a note with any questions they are real helpful guys.

Danm where are ya'll looking for these prices.

Buy a used T56 froma 95 or newer Fbody for $1200 and get it rebuilt for another $750 less than 2k for up to 550lbs/ft or tourqe stock and veryeasily and cheaply upgraded from there. Only trick then is a new bell housing or adapter plate.

Unless you just really want a noisy dogbox tranny which I must agree is its own music to me.

My understanding is the T56 doesn't like 8-9K rpm shifts, it's designed for V8 mussle (aka 6-7K max). It would suck to go thru the swap and blow the tranny after a couple high rpm shifts. Does anyone have better/first hand experience with a T56 and high rpm?

The T56 can take a beating.. My friend Jessiah has a 97 Camaro with a 388ci LT1 solid roller cam w/ a Precision Turbo PT-88 running 12psi on the street. He revs it to 7500-8000 all the time when racing no problems with shifting. I'm waiting to see hot long it lasts w/ 625 lbs. feet of torque.

A dogbox gives you heaps of advantages and it has nothing to do with that great noise!
Speed of shifts on the guru tranny are measured down .35 miliseconds! Strength of gears, performance and realability, that is some of the reason why all the world rally guys use dogboxes as well as top race teams. But yes the sound is cool! for 5k USD I reakon it is a steal, compared to similar gearsets, but that is just me!

Straight cut gears make it sound like a crotch rocket (the whirring sound) it can be annoying, but it can also sound really cool
I'll find a sound clip

With the guru tranny once you hit top gear it is silent (much more than a standard box), so for crusing it is great, and no power drop at all from the flywheel to the rear end!

Damn twister would you get off Guru's nuts.
You sound like a damn advertisment, NOT just a satisfied customer.

The guru stuff is probably nice, but the way you talk about it sounds like your making profit by selling it.

To me it looks like he is a person who is extremely happy with what he has, and is just telling those who asked his opinion.

I wish i had that sort of coin to spend as I would consider a Guru gear set for our car.

I was merely trying to point out a less expensive option with the T56. I personally would love to have a dogbox because I have many hours experience driving cars equipped with them. A good friends now defunct BMW tuner/race shop I’m eventually planning a 20b with most likely a dogbox behind it. Hopefully I can do it the first time ……. But we will see. I may just need to get it running first.

I do know that several of my friends run 400+ hp Fbodies and shift 6500+rpm every week with no problems on their T56’s.
