3rd Gen - What can I do to get more torque.

What good is a 300+ HP car if you don't have torque? Geez! That'll be like owning and driving an S2000!

Seriously, current set up in my 3rd gen is DP, Catback, Intake then later on will have ECU upgrade, underdrive pulley, Hi Flow cats, and a bigger intercooler. Engine/Motor Sounds beefy but what if I add a lightweight flywheel and a new clutch? Will that do the trick?

I want a neck snapper, intimidator, eats up the line kind of torque.

Nope, don't want single turbo....I have to experience the twins first and maybe if I am worthy enough to get the single. Don't want a midpipe either.

Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

Laters,
Jason

All of the mods you listed will increase horsepower as well as torque, except the single turbo, which will decrease torque below 3k rpms in most cases. A small fast spooling single turbo and you can probably match stock below 3k rpm. If you need even more at the low end after going with the cpu and pulleys, the early reports indicate that the M2 ballbearing twins are the fastest spooling, best low-end torque turbos available. You'll probably need bigger injectors and fuel pump as well. If you want more than that at the low end, the Jim LaBreck 6.5l V8 mod is the way to go

Dude,

No offense, but everytime I see your user nick and avatar I think you are a chick! Until I see the name Jason...

Seriously, not a slam. Just want to help a brother out.

Sounds like you might be looking for more throttle response; a turbo rotory makes good torque, but it is not as soon as you touch the pedal. A high compression, naturally aspirated 20b should do it.

Get numerically higher(higher#= lower ratio) gear ratio installed in the rear. 4.30's are the norm I believe. Lower gear ratio=greater torque mutiplication. Negatively affects top speed though. Not really a problem unless you are trying for top speed. Should only raise cruizing rpm by 300 or so. Kinda expensive to get installed though.

I think that is true in some applications (piston motors), but it has not been my experience with the RX-7. A light flywheel greatly increases throttle response and acceleration in low gears on the RX-7. First gear just rips by, second feels noticably faster, and third and higher feel about the same in terms of acceleration. Blipping the throttle for downshifts is both easier and less important with a light flywheel, which is nice for road racing.

I am sure that there are things you can do to focus on low-end torque for the RX-7, but I don't think this goal is specifically addressed by the aftermarket parts manufacturers.

M2s ball bearing sequential turbo upgrade seems like it has the potential to be about the best thing you can do for the low-end of the RPM range, but I haven't seen any dyno sheets for it yet.

Unfortunately, you aren't going to get a lot of torque off the line with the 13B motor because the displacement is small. It isn't ever going to feel like a V8 just off idle. However, it revs quickly and can make a lot of power up top. This is the inherent strength of the motor, and it is the area in which your attention is best focused if you don't want to do an engine swap.

Personally, I prefer the power and "zip" of the rotary over the off the line pull of a torquey motor. Grunt that peters out at the top end is less fun to me than a motor that starts soft and then spings to life and runs strong all the way to redline. Turbos and rotary motors are a good match.

Sexy7 - The first time I saw my 3rd Gen, that what came in to my mind. Whewwww!

Then the "chick" in my avatar is my wife. When I created that avatar, I called it : Beauty and the beast. Now I do not know which one is the beauty or the beast because last night, my beloved wife took on a Dodge Stealth and gave the man no mercy.

Anyway...No need to help a brother out....I know what it's all about.

....Hey guys,

Thanks for the response to the questions. Max, ball bearing twins are on the way.
