Are 3mm apex seals better than 2mm?

Anyone have info on guys using 2.5 mm apex seals? Kind of a little "best of both worlds" type of thing.
I know people have done it, but its' rare enough I can't find any information about it.
I would do it when I make my engine, but not with seeing other peoples results first (not b/c i'm scared but b/c i'm broke!)

This is a dumbass thread/poll because it is mislabeled. They are both moderately interesting topics, but the mismatch between the content and the label makes me wish it was dead (the thread AND poll, if they are separately closable things).

Someone should collect all the useful information and input in this thread and save it onto a webpage.
Get rid of all the flaming and fighting and the stupid poll.
Then we could close this thread and have a handy Sticky thread made with the link to the website inside it.
I will do it if people think that this is a good idea.

I am having an engine built for my FD, and I shall be using the Iannetti 3mm 1 piece design seals.
Although expensive, I have it on good authority that they are THE seals to use.

Fishy...i have those seals....the 3mm one piece....
Im very happy with them...
I disagree that stock is best....because I had to learn to tune the car myself...the 3mm allowed for room to make mistakes in the sense that when i got my bad maps from xs originally I did not lose my motor under detonation.
the money was well spent for the ianettis.

Quote me if I am wrong. I am now rebuilding my engine it all apart. I have 2 guys that are doing the main work and have been building engines for years and we talked about the subject and it goes like the following. The 93 RX7 was built for street driving and millions of dollars were spent on research. For the most part when you start changing things on the car to make it go faster then your taking a chance of something going wrong. 2mm seal were made for the FD for a reason they did not intend for you to start changing parts on the car. The 3mm seals are stronger but they do not seal as good as the 2mm and the 3mm can put a pounding on the rotor because they were not designed for the 3mm. Most problem occur with the 2mm when guys start mis macthing parts poor tuning and dont know what they are doing. Guys make up your mind either build a good reliable street car with nice hp and drives closest to stock as possible or build you a race car with lots of hp but dont look for it to be a reliable as stock or a street driver. My mods: I have a mild street port becuase I want smooth idleing. I have stock primary injecters and 1200 secondary. hi pro fuel pump. suquncial turbos, blits stockmount intercooler, custom made air intake, pettet down pipe, bonz hi flow cat, duel racebeat muffler, stock gready pulley kit, PFC and commander, turbo timer, hard pipe kit, efini y pipe, silicone hose, act clutch, racebeat alum flywheel. ECT....

Just got an email from a guy who ordered stock seals this morning and Mazda told him that you can no longer get the 3 piece 2mm seals, they sell a new 2 piece seal. Anyone else head this?

Pete, I spoke with the guy building my engine. And he has advised me to give these new seals a go. He has already done a couple of engines with them, and they appear to be very strong engines.
So I am saving about a grand, and giving them a try.

Yep just checked, they're Renesis seals and appear to be stronger that the old 3 piece (not my words). At least one car I know of is already running them turbocharged with no problems. Definately good news!

hey well what do you know!? I just called mazdamotorsports and he stated that the RX-8 apex seal will NOT fit the FD...as the RX-8 are too "short"
so RPMpower...what seals are you using???

Since last week, anybody here in Australia ordering a seal kit through their dealer has been told that the regular 3-piece 2mm seals are unavailable permanently. They are being replaced by a NEW 2 piece 2mm seal that is made of the same material as the new RENESIS seals but yes they are obviously a lot bigger because the RX-8 seals are EXTREMELY shallow hard wearing. So God only knows how much regular wear these new ones will be able to take. RXENG explains this better than me (he's on ausrotary too)

But the Supra is a better drag car mostly because it launches better off the line.
3mm seals would make you push more boost, timing advance, and last longer. That's why 12a's last forever.
