RX7 vs. 96-99 Mustang Cobra

Haven't gotten to tell this story much because most of my friends would think i was insane... but back in 2000 I was in my 93' rx7, only modifications were hks intake and exhaust. A mustang cobra pulled up to me the mid 90's version. Going west on a newly paved interstate in Michigan, I was doing 80 indicated when he passed doing about 100. He got in front, switched lanes quickly twice, then hit the brakes and lined up next to me to look over and ask if I wanted to race...

So I dropped it into 4th, got to 125, shifted to 5th, and slowly pulled away contantly until I saw about 5 or 6 car lengths between us and I was doing 163. The windshiled wipers at that speed start to chatter and come up, there's definatly some modification necessary if I want to go that fast without getting nervous...

So I win the race. Not the typical race, but we could see ahead for a couple miles and it was dry clean new road and magically no traffic that day. It was a dream come true.

Hate to tell you this, but those older Cobras were dogs. Only in 03/04 did they become monsters. Nice race though

I don't know, an accaintance of mine has an 01 Cobra and it seems to be a good car. I've seen it go, and it doesn't look slow to me. Maybe i'll race him and see how I do. Abviously, that car can't compre to my buddie's Sonic Blue 03 Cobra but for what it is, it seems to be decent.

Well I raced a Mustang Cobra (not smart since I just bought the car and did not have the chance to have it checked out yet).....anyway, deserted road, no onramps or exits for about 10 miles. Kinda just playing around. We took off at about 30 - 40 mph and it was on........

I was ahead until about 150ish and then the Cobra started pulling even with me at about that point. We slowed down as we could see traffic ahead. About 2 days later I met up with the Mustang owner and found out he had a 32 Valve 351 with a superchargers. Puts down 615 hp AT THE WHEELS.

His friends said he was really pissed for the entire next day because no one keeps up with him. I don't consider it a kill since with more road he would have eventually passed me....but it was fun.

No my car isn't stock

Hate to rain on your parade, but as someone else pointed out above, pre-01 Cobras are nothing to get excited about. They were at best, a high 13 second car on the OEM tires, bone stock. Most usually ran low 14s around 98-100.

Yeee haww.

Mustangs do not suck...03/04 cobras are bad cars, and if you don't believe me go find one and race it. It's just the cobras before that were kinda iffy LOL

FYI for ya'll.......the gen our post creator is refering to is 94-98. 1995 was the last year for the 302. 1996 and up have the 4.6 Modular engine. In 1999 the Cobra had a 4 valve per cylinder DOHC head and there was an embarassing situation where FORD had egg all over their face for over-estimating the claimed 325 hp. In 03-04 SVT supercharged the 4.6 DOHC with the Lightning blower. Stock those ran a 12.9 in the 1/4 mile. It's pathetic how the new Mustang-Cobra-Shelby (in name only) can only pull a 12.9 1/4 mile with it's claimed 500 factory HP. When will they learn......I guess never.
