My FD vs. a Vette

This just happened so its fresh in my mind. Im on my way back from work and im goin about 70, when i see a black corvette in my rear view mirror. It was probably an 00' - 01'. He passes me and starts weaving in and out of traffic. I was bored so i decided to follow him and put my FD to the test. We just kept playing follow the leader until the traffic cleared up. At this point im in front of him and decide to go for it. We start it off goin around 75-80 MPH and i was in 4th. He gains on me off the start pretty easily and next thing i know he's about 4 car lengths up. I throw it into 5th and i notice around 100-105 MPH, i start gaining on him. I quickly close the gap and even to my own surprise fly past him going about 130. I look back at him and he was about 3 or 4 car lengths back when i start to slow down. I waited for him to see if he wanted to try it agian, but he didnt want to go. But yea thats my first post in the kills section, and driving around in an FD i know there is going to be many more volumes.

ArmenMAxx 10-22-06 10:42 PM

feels good beating a big V8 with a guy now confused that a "toy car" just beat him.

SLOASFK 10-22-06 10:51 PM

just some tips, at 75-80 you probably should have gone to 3rd and you still had a lot of 4th left to wind out too if you shifted at 105.

Yeah, I shift to fourth at around 100

yeah, exactly. he could have walked the guy way before...

Rotor Rage7 10-23-06 12:02 AM

yea i know i could have pushed it a little a harder, but my FD has about 123,000 miles on the original motor so im trying to prevent a blown motor from high reving.

That statement alone guarantees the vette driver wasn't even trying.

 sorry bro. Aristo is right that dude was not even racing. Most likely he was in a hurry to go somewhere when all of the sudden some dude does a ricer flybye on him lol.

Orr89rocz 10-23-06 12:48 PM

he might have left off... cuz how do you get 4-5 lengths behind a vette that quickly and start pullin it after 130 where the vette shines? if he pulled you that hard at the start i bet he thought he had it won and didnt see the point in continuing. 4-5 lengths is a LONG way out

slo 10-23-06 12:53 PM

sounds like an unintentional ricer fly by

pearlyellow3000gt 10-23-06 05:16 PM

flyby

I agree with the above post ricer fly by thats some sh!t. The vette has great aero till 170mph they are sick past 110mph. Ive road in many of them.

id say he smoked you pretty bad...those vettes are some quick mother truckers... seems to me you dont know how to race....

adam c 10-23-06 11:49 PM

The Vette beat you badly, and then let up. The race was over. One of the reasons he beat you badly was because you don't know how to drive your car.

Rotor Rage7 10-24-06 01:39 AM

yea i guess i got a lot to learn on how to drive my FD. Im only 18 so i still got a lot of years to learn

Rotor Rage7 10-24-06 01:44 AM

... and mistakes to make :banghead:

adam c 10-24-06 09:31 AM

That's a good attitude :D. Nice to see an 18 year old that doesn't think he knows everything. You will improve. You should try autocrossing. It will really help you to learn to drive your car. There are a couple of good clubs in the bay area. Do a search (google) for SCCA.

LoneCorp 10-24-06 09:33 AM

:D add me on aim im 19 :) (just turned) im learning too :wallbash:

lt1_rx7 10-24-06 10:04 AM

hmm....18 and 19 yr olds with FDs...what the heck?!?! Oh well, thats life...i have 2 FDs sitting at the house...it all works out in the end...

as for racing vettes, or any other v8...I like beating them down low in my 7...blows there mind when u beat them off the line...:-D

RotaryDreamz 10-24-06 03:56 PM

prolly... it depends on how good their food is...

Rotor Rage7 10-24-06 04:06 PM

lol yea well if you stick around make sure we meet up

Orr89rocz 10-24-06 06:19 PM

just know your gears well and what mph range they work in. that way you can get the best acceleration possible. you probly would have made it abit closer in 3rd gear

Rotor Rage7 10-24-06 06:26 PM

^ yea whats the easiest way to figure that stuff out?

spot_skater 10-24-06 07:19 PM

Drive your car. A lot. Like you stole it. And don't crash it.

Orr89rocz 10-24-06 08:10 PM

lol yeah just drive it and see where u shift at and remember about what mph that was at.

like if your third gear goes to 80mph, and ur in 4th gear doing 60, then definately downshift to 3rd to get better acceleration.

Outkast 10-24-06 08:19 PM

Nerds. WTF. Stock 3rd geat goes to 90+. WTF about beating a "VETTE" at 100 in 5th. Never happen. Ass. :buttslay:

Im 18 and own an fd and i dont think i know everything :). But yeah i suck at driving also haha.

Rotary Noob 10-24-06 09:55 PM

Hey buddy, let me interject as well. I have to agree with spot skater, drive like you stole it and dont crash. I drive a 2001 Z06, (thank the parents and major ass kissing on that one) Ive had it to 170, and it pulls all the way. I want to build my RX7for auto cross (my dad still holds that the Z06 will win in a heads up race when im done.) I live up in davis, just moved for school, and ive been looking for meets and things. You got aim? If you do, message me, Jasen Aebischer. Im in school till 2am, but on the weekends i have all the freetime in the world. Im also 18, and i know im not the best driver, and that i dont know everything but im starting to "feel" more what the car is doing. Its a great feeling when you start doing things that are more fun, and doing them in control. Eventually i hope to drive a GT1 class car or some other car in a race series. Keep going for those kills though, gotta love that feeling.

God damn, 18 year olds with FD's and you've got a Z06? You guys parents must love you, a whole lot.

Not trying to be a prick about it, just kind of like :dunno:

Definitely get into some Auto-x. When I first went out and did it I thought I was an OK driver. Then I saw what experienced drivers, in what people would call economy cars, could do. Really humbled me...

Rotary Noob 10-25-06 02:18 PM

I know that its a little odd for an 18 year old to be driving a car that could do rather well on a track as a weekend warrior. I did say there was lots of asskissing involved, and alot of work around the house (not small clean your room stuff, but like put down wood flooring and tile and put in a wood stair case) I also didnt have too shabby grades. Regardless, ive looked around for some Autocross events, (sure that i could find some) but I dont have a helmet, or the money to do it. (College poverty >_<) but i dont plan on stopping any time soon, I should post a couple of my kills...lol

u lose 10-25-06 02:54 PM

rotary noob.. congrats on the vette. i too own a z06. 02 with 600+ rwhp... i'm 24 and got it when i was 21. please please be careful with this car. do not take it lightly. it will bite you. 170 is very very dangerous. i'm am not trying to be an ass because i know how quickly 170 can come up in a z06 or anyother high HP car.... just remember other lives are out there.... can you imagen what you would feel like if you kill someone? what would your parents feel like if you killed yourself? again, i'm def. not trying to be a dick cause i've done it too but i guess i've escaped some situations that could have been the end of me and just don't want to see someone else make a mistake.

enjoy the car, you only live once. just be careful.

rx7playa 10-25-06 04:09 PM

You need to understand your car before you start running your mouth. Chaces are that this will continue to be your only post in this thread until you understand what you are doing. No disrespect, as I am a young driver myself, but you need to learn your car before you can destroy everything on the street. Good job though, its funny to me that we all hunt for that kill against a vette, I myself am in that same situation.

Rotary Noob 10-25-06 04:22 PM

RX7 playa. Lmao man. I love how everyone goes for the Corvette kills. I suppose its just hillarious to me, because I drive one, but still. I dont want my RX to beat a Vette, I want it to beat a McLaren F1 THAT would be awesome.

u lost to a triangle 10-26-06 01:36 PM

im also 18 with a fd........but no asskissing here, just worked my ass off working construction for 10 hour days, 6 days a week.and now i work 2 jobs part time and school to keep up with cashflow. it sucks how some kids get handed everything, there is a kid in gig harbor who got handed a brand new pre-ordered m5 when he got good grades and won a golf tournament.

Rotor Rage7 10-26-06 01:53 PM

i got my FD when i was almost 16, so basically when i still had my permit. I didnt really kiss any ass i just did good in school and my parents think im a good kid and i caught my mom on a good day i guess. So yea the car was handed to me but everything that goes into the car im $$$ for it which can easily cost more than the car. But yea i feel lucky to have that car and i wouldnt want to have gotten any other car.

Rotary Noob 10-26-06 02:52 PM

I pay for mine (including insurance...ouch) But at 16, i didnt exactly have the money to buy it upfront, and with school couldnt hold a job to keep paying for it, but at the moment im paying for everything.

Agree with the feel lucky part, and the car love.

DMoneyRX-7 12-01-06 04:38 PM

I'm 17 and know how to drive the car so age is no excuse. I pay for all modifications. That's what happens when you work for the past 4 years. Here's some good advise. Take it to a empty parking lot in all weather conditions and go crazy with it. Then you will understand the limits of what the cars traction is in all conditions so you won't try something stupid on the highway and wreck.

So if I take my car to the Wal-Mart parking lot in the rain and I get to take it up to 30MPH and just "go crazy with it",that is going to prepare me for real life situations on the highway doing 80MPH+ with other drivers on the road?? :uh:

chinaman 12-04-06 09:58 AM

I agree with 90mph in 3rd gear. I'm assuming that the vette figured you did'nt know what you were doing after he blew by you and just called it quits.
As far as rich kids go, there's a guy that owns an insurance company and bought a Maybach from the dealer I work. His son is 19 and drives a brand new S65! His daughter is about 17 and drives an Aston Martin!

That's good advice? Authentikdit's got it right.

Rotary Noob 12-04-06 04:08 PM

You should practice yes, but 30 mph doesnt do shit when a tire blows at 120, (recently happened to me in a friends RX7 FC.) I spun 3 times, then 1 more the opposite direction before i got it to stop. It was by the grace of god that i managed to straighten it out at all, and not hit anyone. Thankfully it was on an open stretch of freeway, so there wasnt anything to hit. I crossed all the lanes, twice. Tire blew out, removed the rear control arm, and the strut, and i was already doing 120.

Nothing gets your attention quicker than spinning like a top in the middle of a freeway.

Now, heres what i did. Turned with the spin, and kept trying to straighten out when it was going straight again, and it slowed the spin down, till I finally over corrected and spun the other way, and ruined the other side of the wheel. When I finally got it to straighten out, and stop, just before the side of the road, i got out and proceded to take a giant shit. Hands shaking like mad.

30mph in a parking lot may help you understand the basics, but speed is a major factor.

(my friend has since gotten the parts to repair his 7, and it running again. We had another 88 SE come in to the school shop, and he got the parts off it.)

but no worries, the more you drive, the better you get

i dont agree with this...you can be more than capable of knowing a good deal of information at that age. a local kid here is 17 and has bought his own car and all the parts, and built the turbo motor in his integra and has driven it to 12.6's.

at 17 i didnt really know anything but alot of kids do have knowledge.
