Killed a turbo 240sx (literally)

My car is S4 with S5 JDM turbo swap, with exhaust.. everything else is stock (HP wise)

My buddy has an S13 KA-T...

First time we race.. he literally just gets it running with a bare basic tune... takes it out for a test drive with our boss, comes back and looks and me and says "get in your ******* car because we are racing" (we are great friends and are always in competition with each other).

We go out on the expressway, do a couple runs, dead even 1st-3rd.. I slightly pull in 4th... THEN HE BLOWS HIS HEAD GASKET!! Fills all 4 lanes of the expressway with white smoke.. LMAO.

Ok so fast forward 3 months. His car is back together, and is actually tuned professionally at a speed shop. Car made something like 185 to the wheels (pessimistically on an AWD dyno). He still has some AFR bugs to work out on cruise and idle, but load the car is prime time. For reference my car on that same dyno made 170 to the wheels.

Last night he is all happy is car is running again and pretty fast. Tells our buddy to drive his car to feel the power. I say hey we should race again since we haven't done so since you got it tuned...

So we go out on the same expressway... do a couple runs 1st, 2nd, 3rd... again pretty dead even... I ever so slightly start pulling in 4th... the third and last run we do, guess what happens? BLOWS HIS HEAD GASKET AGAIN!!! LMAO HAHAHAH

So right now it is 2-0 FC

Can't wait for round 3! By the time that happens I will be pushing 10psi on a BNR stage 1!!

what is the fun in racing a 180whp car? i just don't get it. If he's always blowing headgaskets, maybe he should have someone else do the work and then put some money into better power upgrades, that way he doesn't have to push the engine to its limits just to make 180.

I agree he should have done it right both times by having a shop build the setup or at least using a metal head gasket LOL instead of the cheap $20 felpro he has been using. This time he got a metal head gasket so hopefully it won't blow again. Although 180 is not that engines limit... most people push 250-300 out of a stock KA and have no issues with it.. he just happened to use the wrong gasket haha.

But a 180whp car that weighs 2400 pounds and is RWD I can assure you is very fun. Try going from a car with 140 brake hp to 180 WHEEL hp.... it feels like the fastest car in the world. Not to mention all he does is race up in the hills... where 180whp feels like you are flying.

hmm clemettic (however you spell it) head gaskets ftw lmao. my buddy is into the ka-t thing and being his good friend and being better at searching means i have done a lot of research on the topic. i've seen a lot of dynos and a bajillion build threads for them by the people that dont want to sleeve their block to make real power (unlike the sr20). they can make a ton of power. i've seen a dyno with over 1k rwhp that runs 7's in the 1/4 mile. the number one rule though is clemettic head gasket. the bottom end is forged from issan and the stock compression on the poor na engine is 8.7:1. it's as if nissan was telling people to boost it. just sayin.

congrats on your wins. rotary owns piston powered cars muahahahahahahahahaha. hehe. can't wait to hear how round 3 goes

^ Thanks! I agree it sorta sucks for my friend

So UPDATE:
My buddy last week got his car back together and running... I told him to break it in for about 500 miles or so before we race again lol. HOPEFULLY Bryan will finish my BNR by then and I will have it on... I wanna beat him legit this time! Not because he blows his engine again haha.

Update

On Friday my buddy got his car back in good running order... engine is strong and he upped the boost to 11psi instead of 7... he texts me his car is prime time and so much faster than before and that we gotta race again.

So the next day I put my BNR Stage 1 (kept it at stock boost 8psi) and immediately noticed it was quicker than with the stock turbo at 10psi

So we finally get a good race in... and we are completely dead even from 2nd to 4th. I mean DEAD even. However, I had a passenger and he didn't... but whatever, for now it is a draw.. 11psi and a tune HERE I COME!
